Two of my favorites: “Son of the Stars” (Raymond F. Jones, a good alien trying to get back home), “Needle” (Hal Clement, a good alien trying to catch an evil one). These were written a very long time ago, but my favorite aunt had dug them up for me when I was a teenager stuck home with a high ankle sprain. Both novels feature teenagers.
I concur with S.Gilberg. “Arrival” is one of the most sophisticated, thoughtful contributions to the extraterrestrial engagement genre, studiously eschewing all Hollywood’s beloved cliches. I was particularly impressed by the manner in which Villeneuve depicts the military, an institution that has almost invariably been portrayed in alien encounter flicks as mindlessly bloodthirsty and reactive.

I guess he had plenty of time to watch our movies after hearing The War of the Worlds.

“The Day The Earth Stood Still” (the original). Earthlings weren’t exactly the good guys in that one.

Hollywood is blamed for being racist? That’ll hurt them. No more alien movies now. Thanks for nothing, Rickard!

The Doctor: There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

“The Day the Earth Stood Still” In the 1950’s version, it was the human race that was the threat to galactic peace.
Stephen Gilberg about 5 years ago
For a more recent positive example, there’s “Arrival.” And you could make a case for the alien Marvel heroes.
