My mother had a hanging houseplant, one of many, above my stepfather’s recliner, and at one point it started to get brown and brittle. She took the matter to her expert at the nursery who asked if she’d recently had a smoker visiting.
Mom said no, in fact, that her husband had just recently had to quit smoking under some pretty stern advice from his doctor. And the plant in question was the one above his chair.
That’s it, said the nurserer. The plant had become addicted to Ralph’s second-hand smoke, and since he quit, it was going through nicotine withdrawal.
After we lost our mobile home (go to “For Better or For Worse” for that story), we ended up living in the basement of a privately-run homeless/halfway house. Our section of the basement had a long table with a fluorescent light over it. I had a small African Violet that I put on the table. It was pretty small when we first got there; when we left just under 2 years later, it was huge and slightly curved, as it kept turning towards the fluorescent!
