Thirteen years of age seemed so long ago, Luann.

So much for Prudence. Easy come, easy go! (As in, so much for the speculation that Luann spills the beans to Pru with a segue back to Tiffany.

    You laugh NOW, Luann.

It wasn’t “funny” when YOU were Fay’s age and chasing after Aaron Hill……,

Well, Luann, at least your mother let you experience life a little. I forget, is Fay homeschooled? It would explain a lot.

So this looks like the finale to the Fay & Axel arc. What next? I don’t wanna see Gunther moving in with Les. But it might be interesting if Tara tries to convince Luann it’s time to fly the coop.

It’s good to see that mother and daughter can both laugh about the dumb things that Luann did at age 13. If Luann is smart she will not ask her mother if she thinks she has stopped doing dumb things now that she is no longer 13.

@JOE PETITJEAN: Sigh… Luann and Nancy aren’t laughing at Fay. They are laughing at what Luann said about how she DIDN’T do dumb things at 13. Of course she knows she made mistakes at 13. That’s what teen years are for; learning. But I guess you and another poster here snarking at Luann were perfect at that age, huh? How very lucky for you. I’m from earth, where teens make mistakes and if they are lucky, they survive them and learn from them. What planet are you from?

I know this is the end of this arc, although there is still Saturday, but this reminds of a Sunday foible panel. But I am okay with this just being a situation where Luann can offer her advice and experience, and be very affirming to a young girl, who, as Luann did at that age, have a crush on a boy. Covers a lot of bases. Also has Luann involved as a moving character in an arc involving Luanniverse. Soooo, what’s next? Nice to see the ironic laughing with mother and daughter. I have done the same with mine.

All unwarranted “snarking” aside, this was (is) a very cute Arc. Heck, I Iike this Fay Kid, and I hope she and Axel, will be “regulars.” We’ll know for sure when their bios are included under the “Meet the Gang” section on Luannfan.com.

Don’t worry about Fay. Her “Grounding” will be short-lived, and Mrs. Garcia’s “disappointment” will soon fade. The Good News IS Momma knows that Fay has got talent, that Axel’s a likable, nice guy, and that her daughter has learned a lesson from all this. So Yeah, I think that Mrs. Garcia will allow Fay a supervised date with Axel, probably before the Summer is over.

The “Problem” IMHO, will be Axel’s “brother” who from the May 22nd Strip, seems to be ready to make sure Axel and Fay don’t get too close with a sort of “Missionary Zeal.”

Axel would do well to find a way to “Sub” Luann for him on the next “date.”

This reminiscence serves to emphasize that “the dumb stuff that 13-year-olds do” is this strip’s strength, way more than “the dumb stuff that college students do, when they act as if they were still 13”. Expect to see Fay doing lots more dumb stuff from here on out.

Even now, I look back in ‘horror’, at how I thought I was “getting by”, in my teen years.

Stuff that you think is/was working for you then, you look back and cringe at just how you could’ve even arrived at that erroneous conclusion…

My behavior at 13 was saintly, just minor episodes like taking my mother’s car out for 2am high speed joyrides with minimal driving skills.

Hmm. A somewhat weaker “throw-away” comic today. A little bit unexpected. If today is such, does that suggest tomorrow will be similar?

Interestingly for me, however, is that while the Fay-Axel arc was not a favorite of mine, I must say that the story built well throughout all the weeks it has been running. Greg did construct a well designed morality play for us through Fay & Axel. I am also very pleased with way Greg built up the characters of Axel and Mrs. Garcia. Both are more fully realized as characters and both are much more likable as characters. Fay has been further fleshed out as well, of course, and I hope that her character retains the knowledge she has gained about how to best make these sorts of decisions in the future.

Ancillary character development….. relatively modest in this arc. Pru was shown (with eyebrows). Axel’s brother was identified as such. I ended up liking his character (Axel’s brother). I am not sure how easy it would be to continue him in the character list because he is sort of “in-between” the ages of Axel-Fay & the main crew. But, I would find it interesting to have his character further develop.

I never cross my arms when my adult daughters are talking to me, unless I’m mad at them. That is very closed body language for Nancy towards her daughter.

As a resident of Florida who does not have children (in public schools or otherwise), but who is a keen observer of what is going on, I find it sad that so many are so eager to dismiss public schools as both a failure and some kind of institution that exists to teach a particular political agenda. My younger bro and sis and I are all veterans of the Pittsburgh public schools (which were much more crowded and less well supplied with lab equipment and such than today’s schools in Florida), yet we did well enough. Till my brother had to take early retirement due to aggressive cancer, he was, in fact, teaching college level chem after starting out in public schools as a kid.

    …….

Charter schools in Florida are not required to subject their students to the continual testing that public schools are, and teachers are not required to have at least a Bachelors. Charter schools are also permitted to open in buildings at don’t meet the fire and building code requirements that public schools must meet. We’ve had charter schools that suddenly shut their doors due to bankruptcy, dumping kids back into a public system that was overloaded and had to find room for them (sometimes by busing them to a more distant school). The parents who had been assured that the charter school would give their kids a much better education than the failing public schools found that their kids could not pass the grade level tests given to them once they returned to public schools.

    ………

Those who consider public school teachers to be in it only for money are wrong; many could do much better in the private sector and most spend their own money to buy supplies for kids. Frankly, I continue to be amazed in light of how the Florida legislature is ruining things that anyone continues to follow this profession in Florida!

All this school talk. It’s like one of those North Korean rockets, long range but a little off target. As far as the strip itself goes: nice epilogue, right on target, but I still wonder if Luann’s shaky glass is going to dump on Nancy’s lap.

What bothered me most about this whole weeks arc was Axel’s reaction. Fay took the initiative to trust confessing her crush to Luann, took the initiative to ask Axel out, and took the initiative to set the logistics of the date up. Axel showed up and criticized her. Unless Fay wants to date her mom this should be a deal breaker. As far as Axel being mature, uh, he brought a chaperone. To a date. Because he was scared of his mom yelling his eyebrows off. Go find a guy who your mom doesn’t like, Fay, unless you want to spend the rest of your life mumbling.
