IMO the voter was the target all along, that’s what happens when politicians decide that trade Wars are easy, the population becomes collateral damage.
That will be the result because it is always the result of trade wars. Only a numbskull with no understanding of economics believes such things are beneficial.
I don’t understand what Trump thinks he’s gaining by staging/waging a trade war. But then, he probably doesn’t, either.
He’s hurting the farmers and others who supposedly form his base. (He may be helping a few, though I suspect it’s very few, but he’s certainly hurting many more.) But he’s also hurting 1%-ers, those who run and own masses of stock in mega-corporations that depend heavily on international trade.
I think trump knows exactly what he’s doing, or rather, he’s using a “management technique” that has worked well for him for decades: He sees a situation, ANY situation, shows up, tosses a bomb in the middle of it, and then stand back and see how the rats scramble, paying close attention to 1) who is loyal to him and 2) how can he choose an outcome that make him look like a winner.
It’s not about winning or losing, doing the right thing, helping others or some other lame platitude…it’s about making money and polishing his ego.
Psychopaths don’t have empathy, that’s what makes them psychopaths. …“persistent antisocial behavior, impaired empathy, impaired remorse, disinhibited, and egotistical traits.” ….. sound familiar
As long as China is selling stuff on EBay for 20% of what I would have to pay for the same thing at an American store, including shipping it to my door instead of using my gas to go hunt for it, China and I are going to have a working relationship. That’s especially true considering that if I buy it at Walmart for much more money, it says “Made in China” on it.
The thing that is sorta blowing me out is that I am reading that companies in the Rust Belt and similar Trump-supporting regions are desperate for workers, advertising like mad and unable to find sufficient numbers of the trained personnel that they need. Tariffs are gonna do a whole lot for that…NOT. But programs to train workers for what we need and immigration reform to supply youth to an aging population is apparently off the table in this benighted administration.
Any economic policy — repeat, ANY policy — produces winners and losers. There will be millionaires hurt by a trade war and dirt-poor households which will benefit from it. That’s not the way to bet, of course, but it reminds us to be wary of sweeping generalizations when anything this complicated comes along.
Trump voters in the rural areas, ranchers and farmers, orchardists, are gettin the royal Trump treatment, the shaft, just like Pruitt and Zinke giving all the gold away to the 1% and again the people get the shaft, which today is more likely mountain top removal or open pits, destroying their jobs, AND the livable environment regulations are intended to protect.

No harm done. It’s not like the Trump supporter had a brain to start with.

It’s called throwing red meat to the rabid nitwits that STILL think Trump has the SLIGHTEST CLUE as to what he’s doing…

Forget “ready, fire, aim”, the Trump showbiz (because it sure as hell ain’t REAL biz!) philosophy is “lights, action, cameras-we approve-of”!

Good thing his voters already hid their heads up their @$$es! Ya know, for safety…yeah, that’s it.
