Piro has not eaten much today, which I suppose is one of the joys of being homeless. If the notes are not enough to reel him in, then maybe the nibbles will do it.
I wonder if Piro’s story is going to be something interesting and reflective or he will just be some school bum looking for notes and snacks. Time will tell.
By the usual patterns of this strip, it feels like Bernice is probably making a fool of herself in some way. If that’s the case it would mean that any relationship between her and Piro won’t work out for some reason. Just a hunch.
Any bets on whether Piro will get full and fall asleep on Bernice’s couch? If so, she may not be able to bring herself to evict him at curfew, and he may spend the night there. What a switch that would be after her assault on Tiffany for the same.
Bernice, you’re overdoing things. You were okay at popcorn. Just start talking about the notes so at least you’re TALKING. Maybe once you both get more comfortable talking to each other, you can find a few other things out, like, ’What’s your phone number, Piro?’
Bernice’s desperate pursuit of Piro is about as boring as this strip can get. Time to move on. Bring back Delta. Bring back Crystal. Bring back Knute…. BRING BACK LUANN!
I think the food has sparked some interest in Piro. Maybe he is destitute and really needs a good meal (or even the sandwich and whatnot that the Smitten Bee has rustled up). The kid needs something to perk up his energy level!
You would think that living with Dez, Bernice might know some secret tea blends that would act like love potions or libido liberators. Still, this is a potentially scary situation. Threat of the unknown.
In order for Piro to become a more likable character we need to learn about his back story now, otherwise we’ll never know if he’s worthy of Bernice’s feelings for him. I still insist that Zane is the best suited character to establish a relationship with Bernice, but I guess at this point Evans will never bring him back.
As I have said before Bernice already has her nose WIDE open for Piro. Now that he is needy, but not in a greedy or manipulative kind of way (we hope) and he is a student, if it turns out a relationship can happen she will be hocked for life. She already defends him putting her job and reputation on the line. I don’t think Greg would let him be the burglar who took the TV either, but she would still defend him. He meets her needs to be needed frankly, and that is fraught with all kinds of potentially very bad things, but not necessarily. He could be a profile in courage going to school with little money, with a goal in mind, and basically being a bit lonely; OMG, that will totally hook Bernice! So lets hope we find out more about him, it’s essentially good, and she finally finds somebody who meets ALL her needs. She will be the good, snarky, but good-hearted Bernice we all know. Lets keep our fingers crossed. Jeez this comic gets one so involved in the fantasy.
GoComics says it has over 500 comics and I probably check about 8 or 10 on a daily basis. Luann, with all of its shortcomings, is still well drawn and the most interesting.Chickweed Lane has some really fine and creative drawing, and is sometimes almost soft porn, but the characters are sterile and not very likable. With Luann, you want the characters to be happy, but they are so repressed that this almost never happens. It’s like a slot machine that never pays off.
Overall, I like several things about today’s comic:
1. I think Bernice is being very nice and gracious to her hoped for “amor” Piro. She is acting far more herself at this point compared to how she was acting in the bathroom or when she was trying to get Tiffany’s phone.
2. I really like Piro’s expression in the last panel. Obviously he stated that he was hungry. But, the way Greg has drawn Piro’s expression, I see more than simply happiness about getting some food…. the way Greg has drawn Piro’s expression makes me feel Piro is kind, polite, and genuinely appreciative to Bernice for her kindness towards him…. in addition to being happy about getting some food.
3. Not sure completely what is on the plate of snacks…. it could be Pop-Tarts as suggested, or perhaps (my first thought) some frozen pizza squares Bernice microwaved, or perhaps waffles. Not really sure. But, the array of foods was nice, and seems fun and really not “over-the-top” as far as what could be offered to a guest. The bowl of what appears to be ramen noodles is also a nice touch. Very “college-ey”.
From the perspective of Piro’s initial comment “I haven’t eaten much today.” many of us have inferred this is another indication of his homelessness. But, while I tend to think he may not have a place to stay, I still think he may be “homeless” for an atypical reason (in other words, not typical poverty). I still suspect he may be either a) purposefully not having a home for some reason (an “experience” or perhaps a “statement” of some sort), or b) he may be from a wealthy family who has cut him off for some reason.

Well, Piro…you’re running out of excuses to ‘exit’… you say “Didn’t each much”, she brings out a buffet…

..If you were suffering from oppressively warm air, I’m sure she can find the “Wind’O’Matic 2000” in one of the closets…
