To answer Goat’s poll myself: creationism, but evolution is a theory. (Personal opinion, not Mormonism’s true say… not that I’m aware of.)

That word “believe” turns this into a faith based poll. I’d more accurately say that I’ve seen valid, documented scientific evidence for evolution. Same can’t be said about creationism, Ken Ham and his idiot ilk nonwithstanding.

Oh boy, here we go. The sundry aspects of evolution are just as well established as fact as is the planet Jupiter, and the “Theory of Evolution” gives order and further explanation to those facts just like the “Theory of Gravity” give explanation to Jupiter staying in its orbit around the Sun. There are aspects of evolution, and of Jupiter, that are still not fully understood, but more is being discovered by science all the time. Creationism, OTOH, is just as utterly self-evident as the idea that the world is flat, and is about as useful. But in any case, a person can’t be reasoned out of something they weren’t reasoned into.

As a Christian who is scientifically literate, of course I accept the reality that the physical evidence around us tells us of a universe that is billions of years old and life that is millions of years old, of dinosaurs and evolution.

But given that the Bible is a history of humans’ interaction with God rather than a book of how stuff works, therefore I don’t see the fact that it’s figurative rather than literal as a particularly big issue.

But there must be more than just a ring of fried dough to existence, and this is absolutely the fact of it; the middle of the dough has been deliberately removed so that the remainder is not half baked.

We have indisputable and unquestionable proof that the Bible is the ultimate source of truth and wisdom, because the Bible says so, and it is the ultimate source of truth and wisdom.

isn’t it always fun to read the comments of people who are in disagreement and see which one resorts to name calling soonest, acting as if that in itself is a plus for their side – it seems we as humankind have ‘evolved’ into thinking that one wins if one can come up with the best put down of the other side – what a lovely world of make believe we create in our ‘proving’ ourselves ‘superior’ to everyone else

Mea culpa, I didn’t plow through the last 45 comments before mine, but I have a couple of observations, nonetheless.1. Many Christians who don’t accept evolution fear that they will go to hell if they don’t believe everything in the Bible, literally. They are scared to view anything in it as figurative, or as the ancients’ impressions of a person’s relationship to a higher power. I, myself, believe in a spiritual force, since (in my opinion) have experienced it. I try to keep up my Christian outlook, because I believe in dancing with the one that brung ya.2. According to what I was taught in graduate school, a theory is never “proven.” Instead, the null hypothesis is supported or not within a previously determined number of degrees of freedom. If someone says that something is “proven,” he or she is not speaking as a scientist.

“Gravity is a theory, too… why not find a nice, tall tower and test it out?”

Apparently, you aren’t aware that there are actually several mainstream scientific theories about gravity. There is no “scientific concensus” about what gravity actually is, nor how it actually works. (There is the descriptive “Law of Gravity” — but, that doesn’t tell us what it is, nor how it works.) Gravity remains one of the great mysteries of science. ~FWIW, I happen to be in the science camp on evolution vs. creationism. Your snarky, ill-informed commentary does not help the “science” side, that you purport to support.

Just out of curiosity, why couldn’t a supreme being use evolution to create? As a programmer, I hardly ever start from scratch to make a new program. I always fine one somewhat close and tweak it until it is what I want. Why wouldn’t a God do something similar?

Anyone, with a modicum of reading comprehension ability, knows that you believed that there is only one theory of gravity — and that you could test it out, by dropping something off a “tall tower”. ~As for why you referred to it as “a theory and not as a law”, I surmise that it’s because: (a) you believed that there is only one theory of gravity; and (b) that you did not, and apparently still do not, know the difference between a scientific “Law” and a scientific “theory”. Hint “law” doesn’t mean what you think it means. ~If you want to serve the science-side in this (ultimately, pointless) debate: don’t comment.

As for your quotations, it is not known widely enough that lying creationists love to take things out of context, and/or present only part of a quote, to make it seem like it says the exact opposite of what it actually does say; that is how they end up with the farcical ploy of pretending that, say, Stephen Jay Gould opposed evolution.Fortunately, hardworking scientists have developed a vaccine for this: The Quote Mine Project. That’s right—creationists do this so often that it was felt necessary to gather all of their lies into one place for ease of reference.
