I think the creators of “The Weekenders” (which no one remembers but I greatly enjoyed) used Calvin’s mom’s meals as inspiration for Tino’s mom’s meals.
Calvin seems to confuse being good with masochism. He sees being good as doing things that he hates to please others. He doesn’t seem to recognize his environmental concerns as part of his goodness.
This is not funny! https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-10867737/Scientists-plan-feed-primary-school-children-crickets-mealworms-make-UK-greener.html
I used to put ketchup on the rice. Lucky for us, rice was an unusual meal item. This works on mashed spuds too. Dad used HP steak sauce, that stuff is great on everything. Gulden’s spicy mustard on the baked beans. Everything tasted better with some kinda spicy sauce.
Oh geez, I’ve been in relationships like this where every “nice” thing was phrased to make sure the other person know how much they hated it.It’s amazing how so many people’s idea of “Nice” is really just a more complicated version of selfishness.
Mom had four kids before she was twenty and no one had really taught her how to cook. One day at breakfast Dad made a comment about the hardness of the biscuits. We four boys laughed and Mom left the table in tears. Nobody made jokes about the food after that. We boys could not cook and all Dad could cook was pancakes and hash. (Oh, and we realized how mean that was.)
LOL at Calvin’s face in the first panel! And I thought Calvin actually liked the idea of eating “maggots” (i.e. rice), as what happened four years earlier… https://www.gocomics.com/calvinandhobbes/1988/11/15

So, all caps, bold font, speaking out of the side of your mouth & raised eyebrows..the true way to show scarcasm. Maybe extra use of ! too.

Are you talking about being good and then canceling it by demanding good presents? I don’t think it works that way, Calvin!

I take it the maggots are rice and the guano is gravy?
I’m impressed with his use of the word guano, so much better than… well, you know.

Maggots are the most versatile food after potatoes. Boiled maggots, stewed maggots, deep fried maggots… the possibilities are endless

I never boil the guano when preparing that dish – it gets too runny.
