It’s usually Calvin who takes the photos of Hobbes. As I mentioned on Sunday, there was another Sunday strip of Hobbes pouncing on Calvin in which Calvin took a photograph of Hobbes and showed it to Dad who – of course – saw Hobbes as a small doll in midair. That was an example of Watterson’s claim that Hobbes doesn’t change shape but the strip shows Hobbes as different characters see him.
Another Sunday strip had Hobbes pulling faces and Calvin taking photos of him and laughing at the faces Hobbes was pulling. Calvin showed them to Dad not realising that Dad just saw photos of the same stuffed doll that he sees Hobbes as.
A series of daily strips had Calvin preparing to take a photo of Hobbes and eventually taking it. We saw Calvin and Hobbes look at the photo which showed Hobbes as the living tiger that both Calvin and Hobbes see Hobbes as. Any other human would have seen it as a photo of a stuffed tiger doll.

Calvin continues on the course to becoming a politician. Except, that’s not really doing something responsible with your life.

Lots of people have made-up backgrounds. The Horatio Alger society is full of them.

Take the picture quickly, Hobbes. Calvin’s contemplation may disappear just as quickly.

This is the first of a three-day story arc about Hobbes taking photos that give a misleading image of Calvin.
