I suspect that we would STILL have a huge number of anti-vaxxed at this point in time, even if their “leaders” had pushed for smarter behavior. Because “stubborn, selfish and poorly informed” isn’t something that a few speeches can change.
For those anti-vaxxers and anti-maskers, herd immunity would require the deaths of a majority of the population of this planet and would take a number of generations to get rid of those susceptible genes.
The hospitals fill with unvaccinated people. Those that survive will still pledge allegiance to their favorite conspiracy theory and the other far-nutcase views.
Probably the US would have much better vaxxing rates if COVID (instead of causing tens of millions of cases morbidity and mortality, combined), it caused permanent and total hair loss.
Need to add Ron Johnson to that list. He recently touted Listerine gargle as a cure of CV-19. Although he is a little late in the race for the stupidest prognosis prize, he is equally dangerous and ignorant.
Need to add Republican governors to the list. They want to use the Trump base for their own political advancement and therefore they also caused many of the thousands upon thousands of unneccessary deaths from Covid. If ANY of the legitimate Republicans running in the 2016 primaries had ended up the nominee, and then gone on to win the general election, the death toll would be far, far lower. Because they would NOT have politicized a virus, they would NOT have lied like the very depths of hell about it for month after month after month, and therefore the Fox Propaganda Channel would not have spouted ITS lies and bulls—t, and the Republican governors would have damn well GOVERNED.
Trumpers where I work claim that there were zero COVID deaths under Trump, and that all of the COVID deaths are Biden’s fault… they claim that any deaths attributed to COVID while Trump was POTUS were all falsely made so doctors could get more money… but now even those who died before Biden was elected are still Biden’s fault…
In an interview on Fux News, the Grim Reaper said the this was part of tRumps plan to improve the economy. Fewer seniors collecting Social Security and Medicare benefits which will extend the programs by years. Also, others that are on government assistant programs will be off the dole.
If…if ..vaccines were administered orally…if…if…needles weren’t involved…if…if… vaccines were as easy to take as the polio “sugar cube”…would there be a stone wall of anti-vaxers???
If masks protected the wearer, then everybody would wear one, but asking Americans to look out for the safety of others is a foreign concept. In Japan, people mask when they have a cold out of respect for the people around them. But here, infecting other people, acting like a loon on an airplane, guns, drinking and driving, drinking and driving with guns – “It’s MY RIGHT!”

I heard a Doctor say on a news show that masking and vaxxing could have cut fatalities by 70%. Do the math.

That is 800,000 using strict medical figures. When you factor in all the deaths due to Covid related causes the number is much higher.

Good to see credit given where it is due. Given a nation with the best technology in the world.. to reach those numbers took some doing.

Got the Salk (first) Polio vaccine – it was an injection. The Sabin vaccine was a different formulation, amenable to the ‘sugar cube’ administration.
