I’m a scale model builder…I take it to a professional level…and trust me, the struggle is real.

They aren’t impossible if (1) you have patience and (2) follow them step by step (of course Calvin asking both of you is too much ;D).

To be fair, that model was probably designed for an age group older than Calvin

And hobbies are supposed to ease stress.

What he did was plane wrong.

His airplanes may not have, but his imagination has wings.

They left out the nails.

Didn’t exactly nail the landing.

“What happened to the planes? They were hit by unfriendly fire!”

“This model is too fancy. It needs to be…planar.”

I checked and model airplane kits are $15-$30. I believe you could still get real airplane glue in 1991, maybe that was why Calvin was having problems. Add to the damages the top of his desk.

I was fairly good at putting together models when I was a kid. Every single one of them succumbed to battle damage within a year. Black Cats were my damage maker of choice.

And Calvin grew up to be a Boing engineer!

I knew a kid (I swear it wasn’t me!) who built a model of the Starship Enterprise, hung it from the ceiling on a string, whacked it with a baseball bat and said, “OK Kirk, let’s see you get out of this one!”

I usually did okay until I got to the decals.

I’ve never seen a decent model that was made for a 6 year old. Even Revells simplest ones were 8+

There’s a meme on Facebook that asks “what did you do as a kid that kids don’t do today?” An answer I didn’t see listed is “unsupervised use of airplane glue.”

Later on, the Phantom Jet model was “in for some rough landings.”

Model airplane (or ship) kits. Does ANYONE buy these anymore for their kids? I suspect not in the internet age.

That does not build character, dear.

Never could figure out those directions on airplane models. Mine usually turned into a glue hot mess.

The plane obviously didn’t have Anti-Calvin chaff.

Orr was the pilot. Everyone got away safely (including Orr, who paddled off to Sweden).

Does IPMS/USA know about this?

I’m happy to say I never used a hammer. I did, however, throw one from one end of the room to the wall at the other end. There’s a certain brand that used cheap plastic to make excessively intricate parts that break, usually after the glue is all cured. It really annoys me that no one else makes a kit for that particular car. The best results I’ve gotten with one of their kits was to replace most of the intricate parts with some from a different brand that are more durable. It’s a non-obvious kit-bash.Also, that scene above took place about 55 years ago.

I used to stick firecrackers up inside the model, climb up on to the roof of the house, light them up and throw it as high and as far as I could.
