One of the greatest myths of American history: The Pilgrims came to the New World in search of religious freedom. They already had that when they moved from England to Leyden, Holland. Unfortunately for them, there were expected to respect everyone else’s religious freedom while they lived there. Which they were not willing to do.
The Pilgrims gave us Massachusetts, or at least the beginnings. Throwing out individuals from the Plymouth Colony for minor doctrinal differences gave us Rhode Island and Connecticut. Pilgrim bigotry remains a guiding principal of America 400 years later.
And COVID-19 killed the 400th anniversary celebration this year. Although a 17th century re-enactor, I did get a feeling of “how fitting.”
They invented it and called it Parlor , now President Orange and his followers can say any crap they want without being censored. The purpose of the press in a free society is to keep tabs on the government in power to speak truth to power. Fox News, OAN and other conservative outlets do a dis-service to their listeners by repeating falsehoods and conspiracies as the truth
Are there any conservatives left who have the courage to speak the truth and accept reality? Is conservative a new synonym for propagandist? It seems that all of them have taken some mind altering drugs.
yup, the united states, where conservatives can lie about the election ’til kingdom come and receive all sorts of coverage in the news media about their idiocy…
“Speak” for conservatives = lies to the rational and truth-seeking rest of us. “Historically, the conservative has favored liberty for the higher orders and constraint for the lower orders. What the conservative sees and dislikes in equality, in other words, is not a threat to freedom but its extension. For in that extension, he sees a loss of his own freedom. ‘We are all agreed as to our own liberty,’ declared Samuel Johnson. ‘But we are not agreed as to the liberty of others: for in proportion as we take, others must lose.’” – The Reactionary Mind by Corey Robin
…and immediately kill anyone they don’t like: Church of England, Catholics, Baptists, Quakers (look up Mary Dyer,) the Wampanoag, Abenaki, MicMac, et myriad cetera.
OBTW, celebrating Christmas was a felony. The penalty for a first offense was 5 schillings (about a week’s wages for a journeyman carpenter or smith.)
Very ironic as the Pilgrims were intolerant of even the least opposition and didn’t come here for religious freedom as much as just looking for a place where they were free to be the oppressors. But I’m with ol’ Gary here and am sure that garyvarvel.com will publish my story of how Trump offered him money to lie to the people and Gary turned it down saying he will do it for love.
The purpose of the press in a free society is to keep tabs on the government in power to speak truth to power.
It is a function of the press not the sole purpose, They are businesses and watching or reading them will reveal lots of other news and fluff, has advertising and gets customers.
Varvel clearly thinks that freedom of speech means freedom of conservatives to speak. “Conservative speech matters.” What about “All speech matters”? I grew up as an agnostic socialist in the South, and my speech was censored, by my school teachers, who firmly forbade me from expressing any criticism of (a rather conservative version of) Christianity. I’m fine with conservatives having the right to speak, to put forward their views. I notice that Varvel is not censored. I think it’s a myth that conservative speech is singled out for censorship. There are complications, as always. We would not allow a math teacher to teach math incorrectly. Should we allow a science teacher to teach “creation science”? I would say no.
By the way, who are the people lurking behind the tree? I suppose they are evil leftists, but are they supposed to be particular identifiable people? I would guess that one of them is Zuckerberg, but who is the other?
The Pilgrims were such an inept group that their settlement went bankrupt in three years, they lost their charter, and Massachusetts became open to all settlers. They were so intolerant of other sects they refused to join nearby cities for defense and suffered a catastrophic fatal indian attack a decade later. [Jim Bishop. The Birth of the United States]
And officials responsible for vote counting can do their jobs without fear of them or their families’ lives being threatened; and a governor of the opposing party can try to protect her constituents without fear of kidnapping and ritual murder. Grow up Varvel-your guy opened up the box of hate and made it OK.
My sister announced (like so many) that she was leaving FB for Parler. My response to her and the rest of them was, “Don’t let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya!”
For those who can’t afford a present for their kids this Christmas . . . . tell them the POS President is still fighting the war to say “Merry Christmas”. They’ll understand. . . .
Our family celebrates Christmas by purchasing toys each year and donating them to a local toy drive. We call it a “Charlie Brown Christmas” because it gives us a “warm feeling” and nobody else knows what you’ve done. (Dark pants not required.)
The history of the Plymouth Colony is a study in Capitalism. The cost of setting up a colony in the New World was considerable. The Pilgrims were financed by a group in England (Venture Captialists?). They had the bad luck to have one of their two ships return to England shortly after departure. More bad luck as they ran into storms which delayed their arrival by a month or more. Being good Europeans, when they first landed on Cape Cod they pillaged corn etc from an deserted Indian village, whose residents probably knew better than to hang around these disease spreading people.
Their initial year was a disaster, and it was soon clear to the investors that they were not going to get wealthy in a hurry. But Governor Bradford and one or two others assumed the debt, and it was paid off. This was done by trading with the Indians for Beaver pelts.
You can read about this in “Americana: A 400 year history of American Capitalism” by Bhu Srinivasan, one of the best US history books I have ever read.
What censorship is he alluding to? The refusal of private media to promulgate views they disagree with? That’s not censorship. Censorship has to do with official acts by governments.
The self-anointed do not understand that their privileged status must now be earned — and only they see themselves as underdogs/victims — as the old myths of born-leaders and predetermination do not work in the diverse society our population is rapidly becoming.
Thou shalt not impede the propaganda channels billionaires and corporations have paid good money for, but the “voice” of POC expressed at the ballot box well that’s a different matter.
Yea, the Dutch and the English got pretty tired of your crap as well which is why you were kicked out. Oh, and they weren’t too fond of you murdering people for non-existent witchcraft as well.
Learn the history…. The pilgrims tried to force their religious views and practices on everyone. That is why Roger Williams escaped and founded Rhode Island.
Think about it, if they were conservatives, I.e. someone who conserves the norms of the day, they would have stayed in England or Holland. Thats like saying Washington, Jefferson and Hancock were patriots, which at that time were supporters of the crown, they were liberals of the day. How can you do political cartoons when you have no clue about history or the meaning of words?
Well Gary, the simple fact you can print this cartoon seems to give the lie to your point. Quit sniveling, and start piling up your expected rips of the new administration, again proving the lie about your position
No, see, when the PRIVATE PLATFORM points out that the orange clown is LYING, that’s not censorship, it’s TRUTH. I can see where you’d be confused, though, having such little experience with truth.
