Johnny ‘Appleseed’ was a real person. He spent his life traveling ahead of where he thought settlers were going to go next and setting up orchards there. And when settlers moved in, he was there, selling them apple trees (apple cider was the most popular drink in colonial America). He was the largest land owner in pre-civil war America, but he didn’t do it for the money – he did it so that he had an opportunity to get to know / talk to people.
