Love that last panel. It’s even more vibrant this time around than in the original. The first time around, this week’s strips were all in one long single strip. This is my absolute all time favorite “stand alone.” Can’t wait for tomorrow!

(Almost) everycat all in one four-panel strip! A triumph! I see that Lupin and Sir Fig are pajama-pattern buddies.

Of course Lupin prefers the Christmas light bugs. He can see them. He can’t hear the peep toads.

LibraryVal. Hello everyone. I have been reading BCN for some time, but have never dared comment before. At the moment I share my home with Oliver, a young cat who was starving, frost bitten and trying to eat oats out of a startled horse’s feed dish out at the barn. He adapted very nicely to being a house cat and living under the rule of my elderly tortie Ronnie. I wanted to share a tale from a friend of mine whose cats would catch and eat lighting bugs. Later on, of course, the chewed up bugs would be thrown up. But, she said, the nice thing was, the throw up still glowed in the dark making it ever so convenient to locate the mess and clean it up.

Those things fascinated me when I lived in the US. One time my wife and I went out for a walk at night just to look at them. We saw one cluster and went towards it, but it receded a bit. We followed. It receded a bit more, up a dark, narrow sort of path between some trees. We followed. The cluster of lights receded a bit more. Then we realised (a) this path was some sort of driveway to an old, dark, house, and (b) the bugs were probably luring us towards a hideous doom.We turned back.

As I understand it, the Christmas light bugs are male and the glowing tail is their way to say “Come on baby, light my fire!”

    We cannot believe our eyes,

    There’s ten million fireflies

Lighting up the sky like Christmas Eve

    …….

    Flying through the open air

    Bringing joy everywhere

At the window we all in awe just stare!

    …….

’Cause we all know and we believe,

In our world, we’re all friendly!

    Though things may get rough

We know we have a place that we can go,

And we can have our thoughts and dreams!

    “Yeah.”

Lupin wonders for the adventure. Puck wonders for the cosmic significance.

We called them lightning bugs when I was a kid living near Kansas City. There aren’t any in California, and I do miss them. But on a trip to the Amazon, we saw synchronous fireflies - they all blinked at once in unison. Amazing! And I just now learned that same phenomenon occurs in the Great Smoky Mountains, apparently the only place in North America. Field trip --?

Of course Lupin prefers the light bugs; peep toads would be pretty boring if you couldn’t hear them.

When we moved to PA, The Miffed Maine Coon had his first encounter with fireflies. Or as he believes, Glowing Man Eating Ninja Bugs. And the next day, our bedroom screen had it’s first encounter with Maintenance.

For those with little ones of the human variety in their lives, find a copy of the picture book SAM AND THE FIREFLY by PD Eastman. It’s really charming. Also, be sure to get some copies of the BCN books while you’re at the bookstore for everyone else.

My sister grew up in Georgia with our dad, but she’d often spend summers with my mother and me in Massachusetts. But in all that time, she never saw a firefly until she was almost 20. She looked out the door one night and saw them in the backyard, and she sounded very worried when she said “Uh… Kevin? There are a bunch of lights in the back yard… what’s going on?”
