In the late 19th century when photography started to become popular, it was firmly believed by many that painting caught the personality much better than a photo. Of course having to sit absolutely motionless for relatively long periods of time led to some very unnatural-looking photos.

After watching your session with the babe in diaphanous draperies, I’ll just hold my hat here if you don’t mind.

The Photograph or A photographer in his studio

    https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Philipp_Sporrer_Das_Foto_1870.jpg

(best viewed by Google Chrome, which can automatically translate most pages as necessary) has info and links that point to info about this roughly jumbo envelope size painting.

    https://www.deutsche-biographie.de/pnd138486565.html

all have info (the first 2 sparse) about this artist (the last 2 in German; again, Chrome can automatically translate), perhaps in addition to what’s indirectly pointed to by the first URL. This is a different caption repeat of the first work by him used here.

    https://www.gocomics.com/that-is-priceless/2018/06/12?comments=visible

has the prior caption (my comment there included the same artist info URLs).

Again, a larger strip image is shown by clicking the image in Mr. Melcher’s MASTERPIECE #2185 (April 21, 2019) blog entry, accessible by the Check out the blog! box after the last comment.
