I know that Bok is not too bright, but this is beyond stupid. Coal mines are shutting down because there is less demand for it, you know, the rules of capitalism.

Natural gas, not politicians, are killing the coal mines. And frankly, for the damage they have inflicted over the decades and especially two years ago, they deserve it.

Yes! Coal is obsolete, just like whale oil. Get rid of all coal and whaling jobs IN THE ENTIRE WORLD!!!

Bok proves once again that conservatives wouldn’t know progress if it bitch-slapped them in the face!

It’s as though Mr. Bok thinks that shutting down the coal mining industries is a bad thing. What next; boosting the tobacco market?

A couple of weeks ago PBS had a show detailing the surge in black lung disease among miners, some still in their 30s. More people work at Arbys’ than in coal mining.

Chip Bok: Since Hillary lost and republicans have had control over the white house and congress, this is a complete lie. Or if you will FAKE NEWS. Since you remain and always will be a REPUBLICAN TROLL this is no surprise. By the way, have you looked at yourself in the mirror lately? When you do, do you use the mantra “I am not a Russian Agent, I am not a Russian Agent…”

Okay, Bok. Go do some actual work in a coal mine for one day. I dare you. Then come back and draw a lucid cartoon about your support for that heinous industry.

There are only about 140,000 working coal miners in the US. Why destroy the planet to keep a few people working a dirty and dangerous job mining a commodity that is not in demand anymore?

While I don’t have a problem with shutting down coal mines, you MUST have a system in place to give those workers good paying/equal paying jobs. You will annihilate the livelihood and money of many states or regions of states. But they’re all red states so the Dems don’t really care.

More people work for Hardees than work in American Coal mines. Why are we SO obsessed with these 50,000 workers. America created 200,000 jobs last MONTHCoal miners are out of work not only because of soft demand but also due to Mechanization and robotics. A miner can set up on piece of machinery that will run most of the day without supervision.

And if/when the Republicans can finish eviscerating the Affordable Care Act, all of the coal miners are going to die of black lung anyway, so what makes you think that THEY care?Oh, right. It’s not the actual MINERS that they’re worried about, it’s the PROFITS for the mine owners.

Good. Please note that instead of letting the “invisible hand” leave those coal miners out of dry, Democrats try and institute programs to help the displaced miners.

Coal Miners, unborn fetuses, and billionaires. All the right cares about…. Damn trying to save the PLANET… lets save the jobs of a few coal workers. You know instead of retraining them to do a job that isn’t contributing to the death of us all.

The peak number of coal miners in the US in the current millennium is about the same as the peak number of Blockbuster Video employees. Burning petrochemicals is a dying industry that’s not good for the people employed in it (think black lung) or for the general population (lung cancer, mountaintop removal, groundwater contamination). Why is it so much more worth saving than the corner video store? It’s not, of course, but it pumps up a lot of dishonest politicians’ vote totals in one state.

Of course, Mr. Bok, if you really want to help the coal industry you can start by installing a coal burning furnace in your own home. You know, set the example with action instead of empty words. :-D

It’s very sad that coal mining is going to stop happening. Just think of all the wonderful aspects of being a coal miner or their family: The worry about black lung disease, mine collapse or explosion or vitamin D deficiency. The really great feeling when you get to shower long enough that the water actually runs (almost) clear. The knowledge that your work is making owners rich while you have to plan to die young because you won’t be able to retire. Sigh. Those were the days.

Reminds me of the plight of buggy whip makers, telephone operators, transcriptionists and all those other great professions that have faded away because we just don’t need them any more.

First we came for the candlestick makers, and no one cared.

Then we came for the whale oil industry, and the only ones who cared were the whales.

After that was the savings stamps manufacturers. We destroyed them all. S&H, Gold Bond and Triple S, all dead or dying!

Kodak, you got lucky and dodged the bullet. But we got your film!

And 45’s, LP’s, 8-tracks, cassettes, Beta, VHS! Bwah, hah, hah! Gone, all gone except for a few luddite nerds who will still fall before us!

But our greatest foe, the one still struggling within our grasp is the coal industry. Don’t you worry, my pretty, we’ll get you yet! You backwards, inefficient, dirty, filthy, CORRUPT industry, we will indeed destroy you!

It’s really too bad the shutdown didn’t happen in the 70s or 80s. We’d be in much better shape, climatewise.

For those commenters trying to suggest that there’s something contradictory about Chip Bok’s positions, don’t forget that he’s also opposed to putting the manufacturers of mass-murder weapons out of business.

Just as the coal mines supply those who are destroying our natural environment, the gun manufacturers are supplying those who are destroying humans and the environment of a secure society.

40% of world power is from coal. China consumes over 50% of the world’s coal, with India using about 12%. In contrast, the U.S. consumes 9% of the world’s coal with Europe at 8%. US coal use has peaked and is expected to remain mostly constant for the next several years. Increasing steel and also electric car use by developing countries will necessitate more coal use. While it is true that US coal plants are aging and regulations and cheaper natural gas are killing anything new, coal will still be in some demand – just not as much as previously. All that aside, I don’t think airplanes are going away soon. I guess with all the hot air (renewable resource) from Washington, we are expected to use balloons :)
