I don’t get the whole marathon experience (of course, I’ve never run one, so how could I get it?) It just seems like something people do just so they can say they did it.
I mean, I get the whole sense of accomplishment and the discipline and dedication involved, but couldn’t you get the same experience running a few miles a day? You’d still be healthy, and get a daily sense of accomplishment, etc. Not even running…even walking every day, or some other activity.
To each his own, of course…but I’d be just as proud of you if you had run 25 miles, or even 10 miles…Pheidippides notwithstanding, 26.2 miles seems a little arbitrary: it doesn’t say anything more about you as a person than running, say, 5 miles.
I have run HALF marathons. The last mile was always the killer. If I could go back in time, I would not run. Everyone told me you can’t be fit if you don’t run. Not true. And thanks to all that “fitness”, I now have two knee replacements. But I can still skate and that’s my passion-sport.
The Berlin Marathon was run earlier today. Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge won the race in a time of 2:01:40, breaking the world record by 77 seconds and about 4 1/2 minutes ahead of the second place finisher. An amazing accomplishment!
I don’t run. I can and will walk for miles but I poop out way too early if I run. Nice to see her family help her get from the finish line to the table to pick up her souvenir t-shirt.
I agree about the running. I have done marathons, 10 km etc, loved it. Paying for it in my 50’s and need knee replacements. Love the strip. She is easy to relate to.

I walk. My doctor told me YEARS ago not to jog or run. Walk. Easier on the knees. Now I’m 75 and still going strong…about 3 miles a day now.

As a seasoned marathoner I know once put it, along about the 20 mile mark she’s thinking, “I paid money to do this??”

I imagine that this will be printed out and put up on gym lockers, parks & rec admins’ cubicle walls, and at the cash register at sportswear shops.

I’ve never seen a runner look happy while running. In fact, most look like their miserable. Why would anyone want to do that??
