Darn! When Dad sees this note from the Principal, I know he’ll make me get a haircut. But he might let me keep my beard…

The tricky part about today’s painting is that it’s not the whole thing; it’s a detail from Durer’s “Feast of the Rosary.” There’s a good article about it at https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feast_of_the_Rosary. I suspect Steve Melcher found the image at http://www.culturekiosque.com/art/travel/feast_of_the_rose_garlands.html because that’s where this exact detail exists, framed exactly this way. The colors match very well too. Which is a partial answer to a question that interests me: what sources does Melcher use? By the way, that second URL also has good information about this work. The figure is thought to be a self-portrait of Durer. I noticed that the self-portrait is indeed mistier, lighter and less well-defined then all the other people in the painting, which might be Durer’s clever way of placing himself in the image non-realistically.

(best viewed using Google Chrome, which can automatically translate most pages as necessary) has info and links that point to info about the full painting. It has this self-portrait the artist included (standing under a tree at the right).
