Because Earth isn’t really a planet. It’s a plane of Heaven that the astronomical bodies have been revolving around for a few thousand years. Duh! I thought every science-hating wingnut knew that.

Rember, don’t trust your eyes. Which actually IS what the Roman Catholic Church taught when it was known for thousands of years that the Earth, like the moon, was not flat, and the sun did NOT revolve around it.

I’m kinda surprised she admits the moon and planets are round, they look like discs hanging in space.

Isaac Asimov did a lovely riff on this topic in 1957 called “Ideas Die Hard.” The story is more of a psychodrama than anything else, and delightfully constructed; it concerns two astronauts on a voyage to the moon that goes terribly wrong… or does it? I recommend it for a good read.

knew a person that held views that were outlandish and not correct. he believed that viruses and bacteria were the same thing. that people don’t need oxygen to breathe. women do not go the bathroom to expel bodily waste, but go to bathroom for sex. petroleum is naturally occurring and is infinite. tobacco doesn’t cause cancer. doesn’t believe in evolution, but gets a flu shot every year, and won’t vaccinate his kids. hates gays, but loves lesbian porn. believes in god, but swears, curses, and takes the lord’s name in vain all the time.

I just know I’ve had this conversation before…. :D :PFacts matter, dare to evolve. As for the Flat Earth Heads, they believe the earth is flat, but disk shaped. Kinda like paper maps, so figure they can work how Magellan circumnavigated the earth around that. Doesn’t make it true, but if you want to be dumb on purpose, sometimes it takes a clever approach to get around the intellectual approach. Of course, to believe that, they also likely believe that some giant guy throws his cloak, on which the moon, stars, etc. are sown onto, over the sky at night. Yeah, ok.As for me,I’m still giggin’ on gravitational waves. :D As they say at the Adler Planetarium, Science is Freaking Awesome!

The discussion did remind me of the news reports when the first probe took pictures of the “back” or “dark” side of the moon. There was a lot of disussion about what might be revealed for the first time Man saw that side, and the photos weren’t very surprising actually.

Which, what percentage of folks alive today were around before the question was answered? How many folks don’t know a time when it was a “mystery”???

Yes, the earth is not flat. However, most people use so little of it at a time, it might as well be flat. When doing carpentry or laying out a flower garden, I’ve never taken the curvature of the earth into account. Rhumb lines work just fine.
