As a voter, I find the question “What have you got to lose?” a rather disturbing campaign slogan, especially from Donald Trump. Based on his record, his past, and his conduct, it’s a question I’d really rather not contemplate.
This may be Mr. Toles’ last strip? Maybe a Sunday piece? Anyway, Tom’s retiring, so sing out, boys and girls, with a note of appreciation, for many years of hard work.
Just because we didn’t say it out loud, doesn’t mean, we didn’t enjoy your work. Tom, put the alarm clock in a drawer and have some nice lazy fun.
Through history there are thoughtful analyses of of human society in essays as well as stories of fiction. Piquant references to then-current politics are common.
Among early tribes, cosmology, hunting, and warfare analogies appeared in storytelling. Religious myths expressed common concerns of people. Religious themes gradually merged with secular. Entertaining elements appeared in the narratives to provide interest for all ages.
Later Romans had the fantasies of Lucian, among others. Various National Sagas extoll nobility and honor, and attribute fantastic abilities to their heroes. Later, we had “Utopia,” “Gulliver’s Travels,” and “Micromegas” of Voltaire, among other authors. “Brave New World” and “1984” are further, modern examples. Now, Science Fiction and Fantasy stories seem to continue the tradition, mostly secular in tone.
“What Have You Got to Lose?” Through time, humans have lost basic freedoms to gain security and comfort. Donald Trump is only the latest to use that election slogan to entice lazy, non-contemplative voters. Those who resist the vision of Trumpism have given up much, but so far not their actual “souls.”
In a Far Future, “Necromongers” are an aggressive interstellar empire that forces conversion to its ideals. Normal human life concerns are antithetical to their concept of societal purity. People of conquered worlds must be “converted.” What have they to lose? Against those who resist, the Lord Marshall can literally rip their souls from their bodies. (“Chronicles of Riddick”)
Today, those in power rip out peoples’ dignity, their reputations, and joy of living — but so far not their actual “souls.” Trumpism is not the last dark movement to gain power. As did others, it preferrs implicit threat of violence, but will also act explicitly.
Can we stop the spreading stain that Trumpism represents? This might be the national saga of our present generation. (The battle vs.Climate Change looms)
You have to be nuts to not vote out every fascist, racist, sexist, covid spreading, post office destroying, election rigging, vote suppressing, Putin loving republican.
What I have to lose Authoritism, A coming church-state, fascism, constant lies, seeing people die, kids disappearing, democracy dying. white privilege b*llsh*t (i am white), a future where people are removed for society because of skin color, religious beliefs, and sexual idenity. loss of anti-science beliefs. And yout and your damned family in the white house.
Don’t mind losing tRump. Do mind losing you! Many thanks for your wit and talents on display, and the laughs you brought me every day! I hope you are healthy and happy more often than not, and I wish you all the best! Jody
I have to say, there goes one of the most incisive pens on all the editorial comics pages anywhere. The drawings go beyond economy to being the reductio ad absurdum of their subjects.
I started as a sneering skeptic, and leave as a fan.
Well, Mr. Toles, God Bless you, and have a happy retirement. You have absolutely earned it. I, among many, many others, will miss you! I’ve admired your work for years!

Even MORE to Lose – {4 beats/line}
A great deal MORE our nation will lose
if folks yet AGAIN get tricked by the ruse
of a warped and malignant narcissist whose
effect on our country is to give us the blues.
