Information: payed newspaper with dry checked news (some call it censured?). Disinformation: everything goes out for free (it looks and feels like free, but you pay it with your freedom), juicy gossip straight from the source (unchecked). What do you think is the most appealing?

Democratization of information is not a bad thing – the Supremacy of the Editorial is being challenged. That is a good thing. It was essentially the news media that came up with the term “Post-truth” to malign social media, so that they(MSM) could get more subscribers. Remember – the primary goal of social media is to connect ppl and that is a wonderful thing. MSM’s (self-appointed) job is to be “economical with the truth” (cherry-pick-facts for those linguistically challenged) and push their own ideological narratives. So much for an informed citizenry in a democracy.

Social media is not real information – it’s the market gossip of old that inspired mobs. It’s very vulnerable to manipulation by vested interests who don’t have to spend millions to buy up MSM outlets like before. We also see the dregs of humanity give vent to their basest nature in SM.

I could live with a hundred MSM channels with corporate control if we could have just one independent medium and no SM. But then, the genie is out of the bottle…

Being informed is hard. Being uninformed, misinformed or disinformed is easy.

The desk is being replaced by a large interactive searchable map screen. I still tend to end up lost on the wrong floor in the opposite wing from where I wanted to go.

Anyone remember the old party game (we called it “telegraph” but it was better known as “gossip”) where a circle of people would whisper a phrase one by one in the ear of the person next to them and you’d see how mangled the phrase got by the time it had been passed along to the end? I think today they call it either writing a congressional bill of law or handling an insurance claim, but social media comes pretty close too.

If recipients accurately returned to us their perceptions of what we look and sound like, we wouldn’t recognize ourselves. That is, if we believed them.

Golly, if all the subscribers of social media were as smart, above it all, and condescending as the commenters on GoComics, then social media subscribers would be smart, above it all, and condescending, too.

I made the stupid mistake of stopping at an “Information” booth in a resort town only to have them try to sell me boat rides, etc. I just wanted directions.

I think I’ve been in that shopping district based on the store names… although they were known as “Hickory Farms of Ohio”, “Pier One Imports”, and “Sharper Image”.

The over-the-fence, and barber shop gossip has been replaced by Whatsapp and Facebook and thousands of other social media platforms, but one thing hasn’t changed…the amount of misinformation and maliciousness. The only thing that’s changed is the speed in which it is delivered.
