That’s one of the reasons that high-diving can be fun. So I’m told…

“If you can walk away from a landing, it’s a good landing. If you use the airplane the next day, it’s an outstanding landing.” Chuck Yeager

“It’s not the fall that kills you; it’s the sudden stop at the end.” Douglas Adams

Successful flying does not require a successful landing – unless you want to do it again.

Successful flying only requires missing the ground. (Douglas Adams)

Successful flying also requires actual flying – not just moving through the air.

I fell out of a swing and landed on my back. It knocked the breath out of me. I thought that I was dying. Very scary to a six-year old.

She was able to walk away. I understand that is the definition of a good landing.

Gotta love the kid’s expression as the ‘flight’ starts and then begins to reach the uh-oh point. But then, Mallet is very good at depicting that. He hasn’t forgotten what some minutes of childhood were like.

One of the strips I accidentally ran into will explain why I really like this comic. A few years ago I was ‘paging’ through the list of available strips and happened on Frazz. It was a full Sunday panel of kids on a ‘recess/play time’ break. They were everywhere, doing whatever was available, whether on playground equipment or their own imaginations. Jumping, teeterboard, swings, slides, running, throwing a ball or just dancing. Total freedom and their expressions were both joyful and free of anger or angst. A joy to see, even on screen.

Reminded me of my own schoolyard days and of later times as a teacher when I ‘monitored’ free periods on our school playground.

In recent years, those mass action panels have been very rare. Today’s was a very good change up.

Controlled Flight Into Terrain, CFIT is defined as an unintentional collision with terrain (the ground, a mountain, a body of water, or an obstacle) while an aircraft is under positive control. Most often, the pilot or crew is unaware of the looming disaster until it is too late.

I lost friends to cumulo-granite (Pilot slang for mountains or cliffs hidden by clouds),

Company pilot ripped the undercarriage off our Twin Otter, had turned off radio altimeter alert, it annoyed him

That’s why Seal only believed he could fly. Or Buzz Lightyear was accused of “falling with style.”

Taking off and flying are easy. It’s a good landing that’s the hard part.

Favorite flight-attendant safety messages, from back before they started playing recordings:

“In the unlikely event of a water landing, you’ll know you’re not in Kansas any more.”
