I tend to agree with Garfield on this one. sometimes a mindless comedy romp is just what the doctor ordered!

How to pick a really great movie? Always choose one the critics hate & say is no good.

Very true. I mean, how else do you explain how so many hate The Oscars? ‘Professionals’ are the ones giving the awards to the ones THEY like or are too popular, while most of the true masterpieces get left behind.

If it wasn’t for the fancy words, I might get the joke. I know sophomore means wise fool so sophomoric must mean wise but yet foolish, but I’m not quite aware what raunchy means.

Critics do seem to hate some of the most fun movies.

Yup! all the critics should be put in a museum. That is their only use now.

That kind of thing happens. Critics didn’t like the new Godzilla movies for some reason. I say that movies are a matter of personal taste.

As a general rule, if the movie is panned by the “critics” then my wife and I will likely enjoy it. We don’t go to the theater anymore, we rent it and watch it at our leisure. I like the ability to pause the show to get more snacks, etc.

I’ve liked several films recently that critics hated. But then I usually ignore their viewpoint unless it’s already a film I was a bit iffy on

In the 80’s my brainy/Mensa/MBA type buddies and I loved the Stooges, Jim Carrey movies, etc. Our snooty wives thought we were disgusting.

Star Wars. It was panned mercilessly by the critics in 1972 when it came out.

My version is that any movies that merit an academy award is not anything I’d want to see. Only exception is ones for special effects.

I usually like movies the critics dont.

That’s why the box office receipts always trump the critical reviews. I feel about critics much the same way I feel about many wine connoisseurs. They can be useful, I suppose, but they’re not indispensable. I often find their arrogant smugness of their self-proclaimed expertise off-putting. But my untutored taste and palate has served me well enough for nearly nine decades now, so while I might consider their recommendations, I definitely go with what I like.

Back in the ’70’s and ’80’s the Kansas City Star had a movie critic named Butler. My wife and I always read his reviews and went to the movies he hated instead of the crap he liked.

Critics,shmitics….I’m my own critic & I’ve never been disappointed…..

If Liz were here, would she have the same opinion, or would she think that they’re pigs for watching such a ridiculous movie?

They must be watching Netflix.

shrugs. I never really trust critics and make my own opinion. the crap “critics” about Strange World from Disney sure proved it how people can be just plain dumb…

Critics are useless. It’s just one person’s opinion!

What do critics know anyway?

The differences in audience and critic movie and TV show scores, particularly at Rotten Tomatoes, is often extreme.

If the critics adore it, I deplore it; if the critics pan it, I’m a fan of it!

First one I thought of was Kentucky Fried Movie. I thought it was hilarious when I first saw it in my 20s, but when I watched it again 30 years later, I was less impressed.

Uh oh.

Garfield, those are words of wisdom, very true!
