Isn’t it funny how so few people know the tale of Pinocchio except through the totally mangled version done by Disney? In the story I read as a child Pinocchio didn’t let the cricket conscience ride around on his shoulder and be his guiding light. He stomped on it and smashed it flat.

Every morning when I wake up I think to myself, who would trust someone who lies with every breath, who cheats in every relationship, who never pays what he owes, who always betrays everyone who follows him, and who is only in it for himself, and I think about all the followers of Donald J Trump — how can they be so blind? So unaware of their own peril? So willing to eat their own excrement? What a successful con artist; what a successful Ponzi schemer; what a successful thief of people’s virtue. He is able to make people who think of themselves as Christians into promoters of lies and hate, and villainous programs designed to make other believers into victims. How can they not detect the horns hiding in his hairdo, or the cloven hoofs on his feet? He is truly the embodiment of evil, yet there are people blind to who he is and his goals. This, in my mind, is the failure of centuries of the Christian church — choosing some verses, and ignoring others in the word of God. So eager to champion someone, anyone, who identifies with their hate and sense of grievance against other creatures of God.

And this is yet another reason Mr Bennett has one of those Pulitzer thingies.
