Roll me up a character, I want to play! I’ll bring my dice box! I have the cutest new dice set and nowhere to take them.

(Also, if you have cats, you already know: never do this. Do not leave your TTRPG pieces out unattended. You will never get them all back.)

I’ve never played Dungeons and Dragons, but Dancers and Dart guns sounds more interesting than Dancing with the D List.

I do not think it is probable that the game pieces will be unaffected by this development.

Dancers and Dartguns sounds fun. I wonder if the Mice and Cats get to play as human like creatures in Vaults and Vacuums’?

I played a bit of D&D years ago. I wasn’t very good at it. I think the D20 had it out for me.

Although Vaults and Vacuums doesn’t have much substance to it, Volts and Voles should turn out to be an electrifyingly exciting game…

…What tabletop gamer in their right mind would leave their dice where the cats can get to them? The number of times I’ve had to rescue or retrieve my dice from one of the furbearing members of the family…At least their favorites tend to be ones that don’t get rolled that often! (d30 and d100)

Better level up fast in a game like “Volts and Voles”! Be sure you have plenty healing and energy tinctures so thy spells will be strong and thy strength dynamic! ❤ (gamers will take my meaning) ;)

I haven’t played a board game in a very long time and not even cards since MIL passed. But certainly can see the problem leaving a game in progress in a house full of cats! I don’t think I’d even leave a picture puzzle out and I always secure my knitting well away from curious paws and noses.

I don’t know if I would call D&D a “tabletop game” since there’s no board. You do need something to roll the dice on though.

You’ve got to know what your roll is

    Know where your vole is

    Know how to role play

    And then, when you’re done

    You never leave your pieces

    Just a-layin’ on the table

They’ll be prime stuff for stealin’

Abba: The Winner Takes it All

    It’s well after ten,

The Humans have gone to bed now

    Too tired to put away

The game that they had played

    …….

    The cats are wide awake,

When all is done and said now,

    They’ve invited their mouse friends,

    The evening never ends!

    …….

    Tonight we’ll play it all!

    Whatever may befall!

    We’ll play our favorite roles,

    With Vacuums, Volts, and Voles!

    …….

    Batting all the dice

    All along the floor there

    Everywhere they go,

Where they end up no one knows,

    Our friends the Robber Mice,

    Bringing even more there,

It’s time to bring it on

    Playing until dawn!

    …….

    The Humans brought the dice,

They left them out, so nice!

    We get to play again

    Why should they complain?

    …….

And now it’s time to play,

With the dice and mice friends,

    Batting across the floor,

    Such fun forevermore!

    …….

    No fair hoarding dice

    Or underneath the sofa

    Hiding them away,

    It is time to play!

    …….

    Because, you see,

    Tonight we’ll play it all!

    Tonight we’ll play it all!

    Tonight we’ll play it all!

    …….

Our cat once ate a die from a Monopoly game that we left unattended for two minutes. We weren’t completely certain he had eaten it until the next day when he howled and yelled while in the litter box. When we went to investigate, there was the die, firmly embedded in a big ol’ poo.

    Meanwhile, Back on the Nile

Beatrixia: I just found this scroll in the 794s on a board game called Senet.

Puckmosis I’ve heard of that. Back in the day it was played by royalty and commoners alike. But nowadays no one knows the rules.

Elvis-Anum: The pictures of the board and playing pieces are lovely, though. I wonder if the Artists would be interested in making one.

Puckmosis: I’ll ask Iron Glove when he and Adobe Style are here from Afar.

Sometime Later, at the Artists’ Studio

Iron Glove: I’m delighted to show you my new Senet board and playing pieces. Now how do you play it?

Beatrixia: That’s what we’re trying to find out. According to the scrolls, Senet means Passing in the ancient tongue.

Lupinium: That must be it! Bea, run to the end of the room and I’ll throw the board to you.

Bea: I don’t think that’s quite what they mean. There is another scroll with old-style hieroglyphs. Maybe we can ask Violet-Ifa if she can translate.

    Sometime Later

Violet-Ifa: Yes, these hieroglyphs are about the game of Senet.

    Puckmosis: What do they say?

Vi: “We kinda made up the rules at we went along.”

After a many, many year hiatus, Albert’s Man ran a one-shot RPG for our friends while we were visiting. He had just asked if there’d be some time to game while we were there, figuring someone had a campaign he could drop in on, and our host said “Sure! What do you want to run?” That’s a vote of confidence, considering how long it had been since they gamed together.

If anyone is into D&D there are videos on YouTube or podcasts of same episodes on where ever you get your podcasts to a series called Critical Role. I highly recommend Campaign Two. 141 episodes of wonderful stories and adventures. I personally prefer the videos first as to watch these people play is wonderful as all being voice actors they can really tell the stories. The DM is also a great leader. Become a critter and watch Critical Role on YouTube.

    Off-topic: Local ship’s cat

I spotted this cat on the docks and learned his name was Ulua. He is very distinctive because he has a “poodle cut” and wears a variety of cat vests to stay warm. He was mixing with tourists, disdaining to recognize their leashed dogs as a threat and generally “owning” the dock. Sometimes he wears a vest that says “SECURITY” across the back.

It can be a small world for cats. I learned from a neighbor that Ulua used to live in my neighborhood before he became a sailor and took up shaving. I remembered I used to occasionally see a hugely fluffy black-and-white cat at the end of the dirt cul-de-sac, where I currently live.

Eventually I met his people, who live on an albacore fishing boat. This weekend I took them a batch of six photographs of Ulua which I share with you here. The large boat in the background is his home the Trailblazer. He does goes to sea when the albacore are running.

I wonder, how many of orb have played fantasy board games like D&D? When I was a teenager, we mostly stuck to a weekly poker game (nickel, dime & quarter) or we played baseball. My college student daughter plays online games. It seems like recreational pursuits are generational as well.

Dangers of Dungeons and Dragons – I was on a rare visit home to Texas, when all four brothers, in our thirties, were together. My youngest brother was telling stories about his latest D&D adventures and I was riffing off the absurdity of it all. I had them all laughing, like when they were children and I, as the eldest, was trying to distract them from some particular naughtyness. The oldest of my brothers was laughing the hardest. I kept riffing and he kept laughing until he fell to the floor and we realized he was in trouble. He had literally almost laughed himself to death! Although he recovered fully in a few minutes, he felt that I had been doing it deliberately and resented the incident for years. Yes, humor is that dangerous … but I blame D&D.

I am quite pleased to say that, as a direct result of this story arc, I have become a D&D player in one online group (invited by a friend and fellow BCN fan), as well as an in-person group within my SF fan club.

Many thanks to Georgia and the occupants of the BPH for introducing me to the game at long last! Roll for Initiative… :-).
