The repubs always have to have a war in progress, that’s how their backward feeble mind works and tells then to do “cause that’s what my great great granpaw did, gest leave the infrastructure fixin and schoolin our children and taken care of all them pepple to the Democrats cause that’s what they like todo.”
And yet the RW conveniently forgets him in order to pin the blame on a guy who’s been in office for only 7 months and having to deal with a set surrender pullout date, with minimal troops, and a sabotaged visa system for the Afghans left because of the Last Occupant.
People need to remember their history and how we got there. The American people, by vast majority, supported the military action in Afghanistan after 9/11. Those original objectives were achieved.
The United States AND its allies wanted to prevent the degradation that occurred after the Soviet Union AND the US abandoned Afghanistan in 1989. The intentions were noble but failed in practice. No amount of money or sacrifice was going to “fix” Afghanistan and make it a “normal” state.
The blame for Afghanistan can be spread widely. Bush, Obama, Trump and Biden all it as does every politician elected during that time. The majority of Americans wanted out. Now, everyone has buyer’s remorse because the pullout wasn’t peaceful and tranquil. It was never going to be. That’s the pipe dream of nation building. The conquered rarely thank the conquerors.
The question you have to ask yourself is how many more Americans were people willing to sacrifice so that the Afghan people could have the facade of a “normal” country? Not just the military, but the cost of paying over $2 trillion to occupy Afghanistan? How long were Americans willing to do that? Not much longer by virtually every poll over the last 5 years.
Close, real close. But the name on that pink shirt should be “George H.W. Bush.” This crap has been going on since the 80’s and the funding of the “freedom fighters” (and they sure did fight freedom) by the CIA under Bush1 (literally tons of money and weapons, and Mujahideen = Taliban). It was a freakin’ huge dinner party that nobody should have been to in the first place, and Biden just got stuck with the check.
Bush should have gotten out, almost as soon as he took us in. He didn’t have the courage to finish what he started, leaving it for the next guy. Bush, who should have been a one term president, also set up Obama with signing us out of Iraq after Obama was elected President. Trump didn’t get that idea all on his own, it’s in the Republican sore loser manual.
I don’t entirely blame most Afghans for fleeing, as not everyone has the courage nor ability to fight. Especially, when fighting the soulless, like the Taliban. That said, not fighting, and expecting someone else to come in to fight for them is what handed Afghanistan to the Taliban. Not the USA. It was past time for us to go home.
Cheney, Gingrich and others decided that the Afghan war wasn’t interesting enough (“bombing them would only make the rubble bounce around”), so we attacked Iraq. Now, Saddam Hussein had exactly as much to do with 9/11 as Queen Elizabeth did—and I mean Elizabeth I. Probably keeping out of Iraq completely and concentrating solely on Afghanistan would’ve been more successful—but quite likely not successful enough. It turns out nation building can be a bit tricky…..
Ah, no willie Willie. All you do is lie, post zero sources, and make every single room you walk into foul with your BS. A points whore for imaginary internet points. If you weren’t such an a-hole you’d still be a disgusting traitorous turd.
Pres. Bush had bin Laden cornered in Tora Bora, but decided against going in. The Taliban offered to hand over a gift-wrapped bin Laden to a third party, but the Bush administration had already moved on to Iraq.
Pres. Obama should have left Afghanistan after he killed bin Laden. But the right would have screamed about us abandoning the Afghans and called Obama a quitter.
Don’t forget all the brave, principled souls of both parties — every single member of Congress except Barbara Lee — who voted to enable him. Chomsky’s right — there’s a bipartisan foreign policy establishment that agrees on the shared tenet that “The United States owns the world.”
This must be right out of the Republican/conservative playbook. Bush2 made an exit date with Iraq before leaving office. Obama was obligated to pullout when Iraq refused to come to terms on bringing charges against our soldiers. The media and opposition, and the opportunist tRump, blamed Obama for the resulting collapse of Iraqi troops against ISIL. Then comes tRump surrendering Afghanistan to the Taliban, giving them a date and time we’d leave. The media and opposition try to blame Biden for the mess. Make a bad deal, and leave it for the next guy. Democrats need to wake up and play by Republican/conservative rules, then beat them at their own game.

Mostly Obama, eight years of procrastination. Trump mentioned getting us out, but lost interest. Biden got stuck holding the bag.

Yup, the withdrawal is a mess. Funny how people have forgotten what a huge mess the previous 20 years has been.
