People need to remember their history and how we got there. The American people, by vast majority, supported the military action in Afghanistan after 9/11. Those original objectives were achieved.
The United States AND its allies wanted to prevent the degradation that occurred after the Soviet Union AND the US abandoned Afghanistan in 1989. The intentions were noble but failed in practice. No amount of money or sacrifice was going to “fix” Afghanistan and make it a “normal” state.
The blame for Afghanistan can be spread widely. Bush, Obama, Trump and Biden all it as does every politician elected during that time. The majority of Americans wanted out. Now, everyone has buyer’s remorse because the pullout wasn’t peaceful and tranquil. It was never going to be. That’s the pipe dream of nation building. The conquered rarely thank the conquerors.
The question you have to ask yourself is how many more Americans were people willing to sacrifice so that the Afghan people could have the facade of a “normal” country? Not just the military, but the cost of paying over $2 trillion to occupy Afghanistan? How long were Americans willing to do that? Not much longer by virtually every poll over the last 5 years.
