Not necessarily. If you have a good relationship with your cat, you can usually do some belly rubs. You just need to watch the cat for warning signs: you can’t generally do it indefinitely. Also, some cats (especially rescues) aren’t good candidates.

I have discovered that our cat will permit her belly to be rubbed under extremely narrow conditions: She has to be relaxed, lying on her side, and totally absorbed in an epic ear-scratch. Under that circumstance, you may rub her belly as much as you want… as long as it’s fewer than three strokes and less than 5 seconds,

It depends on the cat. My girl LOVES belly rubs. The boy is ready to nail you when you’ve barely gotten near it!

You’ll still be kind of shredded if you pet a cat from tail to head. Just ask Lyman in Garfield 14 August 1978.

I know a cat that if you pet him, he turns over wanting his tummy rubbed.

My belly is at everyone’s disposal at any time – just make sure to fill it with lots of kibble, sausages, turkeys, lasagna and whatever there is in the fridge

Cats also aren’t too keen on nose boops, but they exhibit only momentary annoyance.

My cat will let me rub her belly, but I have to be paying all my attention on her or she will let me have it.

If a dog offers his belly, he’s trusting you to scratch it. If a cat offers his belly, he’s trusting you not to.

    You have been warned.

My cat liked having belly rubs, which I thought rather odd, but her kittens are the same. Must be genetic :-)

Watching my two felines interacting, it seems that rolling onto the back to expose the belly is an invitation to play fight. One cat will do this while playfully batting at the other, then the wrestling starts.

Since cats have weapons at the ends of their feet, it’s not the submissive gesture that it is for dogs.

Mine lays on my lap with her belly up just to get belly rubs. She’s going to stay there for as long as I’m willing to pat her.

My outside cats liked their bellies rubbed, but I wore a heavy leather glove just the same as all of a sudden they would register a STOP order by trying to rip my hand apart!

A cool one today from Brian , Roscoe with having his belly rubbed and Muffin in the comic also . The only thing missing is Roscoes tail not being happy , but that is ok . His expression in the last frame is just precious .

I have a mean kitty. She is mean to all the other cats. But if I try to stroke her back, she will roll over and kick my hand away so that I will rub her tummy instead. Strange cat.

I used to have a tabby that loved it. He would climb up in my arms and I’d flip him over like a baby and scritch his belly, and he’s close his eyes and stick all four legs straight out, curling his from paws. I called it his superman pose. Leo.

To a cat it’s wrestling. Sporting practice for when you need to attack or have been attacked. Good fun. Wear falconer’s gloves.

Depends on the cat. Most cat’s don’t like it because of the vulnerability. One of mine loves it and will present his belly for rubs daily.

When I pick out a kitten, I try to pick one who lets me rub its belly. That’s usually a sign they will be a friendly cat.

Cats are a lot like humans, in that respect.

Even the most belly-rub-loving cat will snag you, if you sneeze or make some other loud noise at the wrong time. I’ve done a study. :)
