I rarely see anything other than garter snakes around here. But I’m still startled when they start to slither away and I haven’t noticed them first.

As Indiana Jones once said, “Snakes! I hate snakes!”

The house where we lived until I was 10 had been built on farmland, and my grandparents had a farm, so from time to time we’d find a snake in the garden. Mum would pick it up and let it curl around her hand, and then, if I promised to be very careful she’d “let” me hold it. “Hold it right behind its head. Be very, very gentle, and don’t squeeze it. You’re so much larger and stronger, so you must be very careful.” Oh, what a privilege to be allowed to touch that little creature!

As a result, snakes don’t bother me. I know which ones are venomous and avoid them, but a black snake is no big deal. I’ll walk over and pick it up while the men in the group are all dithering and dancing.

This would be my reaction. Snakes are from the devil. It’s in the Bible. Look it up.

20 years or so ago, I pounded a rattlesnake with a lead pipe until I couldn’t tell one end from the other

More tolerant of snakes now, the garter snakes in the flower garden are safe from my wrath

Somehow, the LORD did not put enmity between me and the serpent. Or at least not the ones with round heads. The last one I encountered with a diamond head got whopped with a chunk of firewood.

My daughter at 5 years old would catch snakes for fun. Scared her mother to death. Didn’t bother me. She kept them outside, mostly……

they are more afraid of you. my min pin and i encountered a foxsnake the other day while on our walk at our Metro Park. it was basking in the sun. i took its picture and left it alone. we have encountered may snakes basking inn the sun and crossing our path and they have never been aggressive towards us. Maybe we will encounter one today on our daily walk. i have my cell ready for a pic.

I get the occasional rat snake in my hen house, then it’s a dead snake. They are so stupid, they will kill a chick, start to swallow and then realize it’s too big, so they spit it out. Seen it happen too many times.

Along with insects, spiders, and assorted other speedy little critters, I believe the startle element, is a major factor.

We lived at a house that had chicken wire along the side of the house from the house to the brick wall. I came out one day and there was a big snake caught in the chicken wire! I didn’t touch it let alone pet it. ( got the guy across the street to get it. I don’t remember if it was dead or alive. But either way it wasn’t wanted)

When I was about ten, there was a city wading pool on the block behind our house. It was drained every night and refilled the next day. The woman who filled it would come to my house and get me to open the access panel in the ground and take out any garter snakes so she could turn on the water. They loved to lie in there where it was cool and damp. I was such a tomboy!

When I was in my teens, I used to own a California King snake. Sometimes I would take pity on him being cooped up in his tank, and let him out to roam our apartment. One time, he climbed up to the window ledge using a plug-in charger as a stepping stone, got into the window track, and shinnied his way to the top of the window frame. From there, he climbed out onto the curtain rod and could go no farther. I would also take him out and put him in small trees in the sun. What, me spoil a snake?
