I have a big old owl that likes to sit in my big tree out back late at night and start hooting at a mate down by the river. He’s real loud too and often I can hear a faint reply to his call if I step outside.
I was working at a lake side resort. One evening I was heading to my cabin. As I was crossing the lot I heard an owl in the woods and callout out to it. It responded and I called back.We did this a few times; and then this girl had come up behind me and yelled back to her friends.“He’s talking to an owl, and its talking back!”Scared me out of my shoes.
We had an owl stuck on our deck once. I woke up hearing something going flutter-flutter, thump, over and over. I opened the bedroom door, and in the moonlight I could see the silhouette of an owl sitting on the deck. The deck, where it wraps around the end of the house at our room, is only four feet wide. It could ‘t spread its wings enough to take off. I woke my husband, who can’t hear a thing without hearing aids, and he walked out there, buck naked, grabbed the owl, and tossed it into the air. Problem solved. Ah, country life on a tree farm!
That neighbor having fun with Earl, wonder if he know is Earl? We had one that went from one tree to our tree and very distinct on owl talk. No not the neighbors.
I used to think I was hearing owls during the day, but my wife told me they were mourning doves. They sound similar. I’m sure she’s right. I see a lot of doves at our bird feeder.
Once, during spring turkey season, another hunter and I “talked to each other” quite a while, with turkey calls… No turkeys were injured during the creation of this story.
What day I was calling turkeys at the same time my grandpa was calling turkeys. We finally both got up to go see why those turkeys were not on the move. We found each other and laughed.
An old guy once told me how to kill an owl that is sitting on a post: “You walk around the owl real slow in a counterclockwise direction, and it’s head will unscrew and fall off”.
Mr. Crane, your Pickles comic strip is perfect example of my wife and I! I too call to the owls in our back pasture, but the one that hit the nail on the head was where Earl was doing all the chores and his wife asked," Earl did you buy another fire truck?" You see Mr. Crane I own 10 real fire trucks! I almost fell out of my chair when I read it. Your strip is the first thing I read when I get up in the morning! Keep up the fantastic work!

Like when bigfoot researchers do howls and tree knocks and they think they are communicating with a sasquatch.

Are you getting too old when you recognize a strip from the first time it was run in 2009?

Owls hunt with stealth and silent wing flaps, so why do they make so much noise?

I’ve got a mocking bird that likes the tree in the backyard. Starts in around 1 a.m. and gets responses from another bird in the area. Oy!
