So why doesn’t Marcie go to school? She so desperately wants to. Is she such a sheep or lemming that if her friends are jumping off a cliff, that she has no free will but to jump off as well?
I heard an interview with Schulz’s son that Schulz would name drop people in the strip sometimes to get to meet them. IIRC he said it worked for both Billie Jean King and Peggy Flemming.
I suspect most young people would have no idea that Billie Jean was a great professional tennis player in her day yet will likely be most remembered for those highly hyped matches with Bobby Riggs. And here’s a juicy bit of music trivia regarding her. She and Elton John were such good friends that Sir Elton and Bernie Taupin wrote a song for her, Philadelphia Freedom, that celebrated her tennis team of the same name. Since the song was released in 1976, most people incorrectly assumed it was honoring the nation’s Bicentennial. It worked out very well for Elton when it became his 4th #1 Billboard hit. Betcha didn’t know.

Leave her Marcie. Let her suffer the consequences of not attending school! It’s not your problem anymore.

I think Mr. Reichardt needs to come and straighten his daughter out.

I’ve always thought that.

Marcie knows that Peppermint Patty deserves no respect at all for this, and yet she still calls her “sir,”

I wonder for how many people the Billie Jean King reference will fly on past them , and never understood?
TampaFanatic1 about 3 years ago
Hey Marcie, just go to school without P Patty, maybe it is time you ditched the “Sir” as well!

Not the one played by Emma Stone in “Battle of the Sexes” (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4622512/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_10), but the real BJK…

Now THAT’S insulting.

And thousands of people under 50 are asking, “Who is Billie Jean King?” And some Under 40 may be asking, “What did HE do?”

Good gosh – she DOES look just like BJK when she’s mad! Which is better than looking like BTK, i suppose.

Failed persuasion has been brought to you by Marcie Johnson.

Schulz was an avid tennis player and was good friends with BJK. He made numerous references to her in the strip.

We have noticed too, Pat. Could be that Schulz and Billie Jean King were very good friends at the time…

Marcie, you should just go without her. Let her dad take care of the situation when he finds out she ditched school.
