Maybe he’s testing the old bromide about the fact that when one digs a hole then has to refill it, there isn’t enough dirt. Example – dug out a large hole for a plant, kept the removed dirt next to it, placed plant, then had to scrape to find enough dirt to fill to level around it. Strange.
