As we get older, we all turn into lip readers, at least a bit. Not sure what’s with hearing the TV though: I can’t see lips on the TV equally badly when the lights are on or off.

The Lady is actually right, without realizing it, the older we get, the more we do lip reading to understand, and so today with all the people wearing mask, it’s not easy for the elders, so talk louder, please.

I was married for a few decades. I marvel at how well I can translate what people actually say into what they actually mean to say. I also marvel at how much I actually need to do so.

With all the stuff on TV nowadays, maybe it’s best that you leave the light off, Earl!

I watch TV without my hearing aids but with my glasses so I can see to read the closed captioning.

Even though my hearing is excellent, mask wearing has shown me how reliant I am on lip-reading to fully understand what someone is saying.

Hey, there is truth to this. For some reason, I always take my bifocals off when I answer the phone. Makes no sense, but there it is.

True. As hearing deteriorates, non-verbal communication becomes more important for the elderly. However, turning a light on to hear the TV…well, that’s just funny.

I don’t think it’s an age thig like Budman2 suggested. I’ve been that way ever since I can remember and I got my first pair of glasses when I was in kindergarten. (circa 1956)

This, in my experience, is a normal near-sighted thing. I can’t listen to people if I’m not wearing my glasses, because my attention will be focused on just trying to see them properly. It’s the same if people are standing in front of a sharply lit window, so all I can see is their silhouette.

At a “Supper bowl” party I sarcastically said "Turn up the Sound! I can’t “See” whats going on" – Not one of the "Biff"s or “Bubba’s” got the jibe….

Many of the wives raised an eyebrow and nodded “Oh Yeah……”

I watch football (If ever) with the sound turned off….that way I don’t have to listen to the “Joe Bucks”….…
