I gather that the delay in arrest was because there were no witnesses. One of the perps was a former cop… or did I imagine that part. In any event, the only account at first was from the shooters and they did claim accidental shot during struggle to keep the young man from getting the gun. I also gather that the story is only making headlines now because of the appearance of the video. But when did the cops have/view the video? Was there a cover up?
My feeling, given all we’ve seen these days, is that there was a cover-up. But I’d still like to know the circumstances around the emergence of the video. The video, unfortunately, does not show what happened before the shot, and it does not show exactly what was happening at the moment of the shot. That is, at least in the clip I’ve seen.
But there’s no excuse for the long gap between this young man’s death and the arrests and coverage.
I am grieving that people are so hateful, that a man like this could be killed so needlessly.
And there are already conspiracy theories that “the media” covered it up till now because the story would have been lost among all the corona virus news. Because “the media” thought the story could damage the Trump candidacy and assist the Biden candidacy, they saved it for a time to inflict the most damage to Trump. I am almost as grieved over this, almost a second shooting of the victim and an assault on the legitimate press.
Here are some things to consider – just think about these. “There were reports of break-ins” is one thing, except there were no police reports for more than a month before this. “They were making a citizens arrest” except that type of ‘citizens arrest’ even without the shooting is not legally recognized in Georgia and they did not contact police. “There were no witnesses” except the video was taken by one of their neighbors (and mysteriously leaked) so yeah, there were witnesses. “At least there were arrests” and “There will be a trial” except I’m not holding my breath on this for one nanosecond. “It wasn’t a lynching” except the definition of that word doesn’t always require a rope and a tree. “Well, he grabbed at their gun” except he ran from two obviously armed men who were driving at him, tried to get away from their truck which changed directions and came at him again, so what would you have done, really done? Nope, this is sketchy as hell. At best it sounds like vigilante crap and at worst a lynching. Wanna bet a dime on what happens and how this turns out? These two know everybody involved in prosecuting them. I’d be amazed if it even got a change of venue and it needs a federal investigation but even that probably won’t help. Funny how the more things change, the more they stay the same, no? No, not funny. “Funny” maybe but not funny one little bit.
Two memories of working in Georgia in the summer of 72. A coworker that drove in to work would frequently mention there were no blacks in his county because they ran out any who tried to move in. Second: Having a beer in a bar where a black guy was minding his own business and a rouge cou walked over, started messing with him and then punched him. The black guy flattened him. The police were called to arrest the black guy. I told them the white guy started it. After being placed in the cop car for awhile, and realizing I wasn’t going to change my story, the cop called me a lover and let the black guy go. Sadly, it seems somethings never change.
No one should live in fear just because they want to do common, ordinary things.
There should be nowhere in America where the capacity for violence and hate like this exists. This is due to our acceptance and tolerance, even encouragement of ignorance.
I don’t generally pay attention to, or form opinions about, high profile crimes like these. But honestly, this case has ‘premeditated murder’ written all over it. The state of Georgia truly is a locus of entrenched institutional bigotry like none other.
We had been slowly, slowly, slowly rolling back the cancer that is racism in this country since Truman integrated the military and Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. And to a greater or lesser extent, all the presidents since Truman edged us a little further in the right direction. Yes, even Reagan and the Bushes. It wasn’t until 2017 that racism once again became OK in America, approved from on high, because they’re “really good people”.
Racism lives everywhere sadly. Plenty of places in America being the wrong shade will get you dead. I’m went to Raider Games in Oakland and LA , I’ve seen first hand White , Brown, Black all setting aside the stupid racist behavior for a common interest. In the Black Hole we are all the same color, Silver & Black. Just don’t think it leaves the Stadium parking lot. A Brother threatened to kill me on International Blvd. a hour later…must have been a Whiner Fan Boy.

At the very least, arrests have been made.

This is heartbreaking, and even more so knowing there would almost certainly not have been arrests without the viral video.

I fear for my son every time he walks out the door. He is a law- abiding citizen. Smart, caring, gentle, but I know his skin makes him a target.
