    The differences in opinion on the purposes of prison suggest one reason it is so difficult to have any coherent policy. The differences in arrest rates and sentencing and the crap shoot of who decides whether to even try a case suggest one reason to seriously question how prisons function in real life. I don’t know that I agree that we should consider no prisons at all. However, it is my deep belief that our current system is profoundly flawed, with terrible consequences to society.
