Why did the word “ugly” get assigned to festive holiday sweaters???

I’m (desperately?) hoping that these two will remember that they have a son, daughter-in-law, and (step)granddaughter before Christmas is past.

The ugly sweater used to be something you got from an old aunt or something. Now it’s been turned into another commercialized seasonal fad, with increasing prices to match!

I never knew that these were “ugly” Christmas sweaters. I just thought over the decades tht they were Christmas sweaters. When did they become considered ugly?

When we used to go to Colonial Williamsburg for their Grand Illumination weekend there was a group of older women who would also come every year and wore their Christmas sweaters – whether it was 20F or 90F they wore their sweaters -never thought of them as ugly sweaters.

Poor Arlo’s got that deer-on-the-headlights look.
