Another factoid: When Armstrong announced “The Eagle has landed”, NASA replied by saying they had a bunch of people about to turn blue (a reference to holding their breaths). The reason for that comment was that just seconds before the LEM touched down, their onboard computer went offline, and the astronauts had to land blind.
What they don’t want you to know is that all this was an elaborate scheme by the men in black to hide the fact about their deal with alien…… Wait, no, not that flashy thingy that makes you forget everything! Noooo!
For those, like me, who might’ve been throw by landing fact #1 when they first learned of it, it’s important to keep in mind that the lunar module’s descent stage had a separate propulsion system from its ascent stage. Neither Armstrong nor mission control would’ve been reckless enough to have risked descent while leaving so little fuel remaining to return Aldrin and Armstrong to their “meal ticket home,” as Collins once phrased it. More than anything, fact #1 indicates NASA did a darned good job estimating fuel needs, and Armstrong did a commendable job piloting the descent.
Nixon, who was President at the time, had a speech ready in case Apollo couldn’t make it back. Also the average smartphone today has many times the computing power available on the whole planet at the time of the moon landing. Think about that the next time you play Candy Crush.

The BBC currently has a podcast series “Thirteen Minutes to the Moon” which gives personal accounts, perspective, and little known details to the events leading up to the landing. Unfortunately, the intro/lead-in is 3-1/2 minutes, the end credits are 3-3/4 minutes, and they tend to repeat things (over and over). But in spite of that, it’s one of the most gripping podcasts that I have heard.
There should be a law against politicians talking about science in ANY form. From Jimmy Carter, who couldn’t pronounce “nuclear” (newkylr) to AOC, who knows nothing about any science but talks confidently about all of them. Now, JFK, he set it on the table and left the moon to the experts. Same with Ronald Reagan and “Star Wars”. Now we have been to the moon and back, and we have an impressive array of anti-ballistic missiles. Climate change has more politicians than scientists involved, it seems. The only truth about that is that we really can’t be sure. “Climate” is eons, not years, and what may be the beginning of a climate change may simply be a few decades of hot weather. That’s all we really know.
I was a teen when I watched the moon landing. I didn’t really appreciate the miracle that they got there….and back….until I watched the movie “First Man”. What a bucket of bolts!

A little revision here…..it was not a broken switch. They broke the head off a circuit breaker. Aldrin used the pen to push back in the remainder.
