It’s all Blah and blather to those trained to ignore substance for ignorance and hatred. Progress and the future of our country is anathema to conservative regression.
The format of mini-speeches makes it difficult, but there were a few worthwhile exchanges. Still, claiming you’re a progressive don’t make it so. And what was with the abrupt termination of any discussion of climate change?
I noticed that Tulsi Gabbard was the only candidate who was asked a question about her past. Where were the questions about Warren having been a Republican as late as 1996, or Booker’s corporatist history, or the consistent support of the wars across the globe by Booker, Klobuchar, and O’Rourke, or any of a number of other things that candidates don’t want to hear?
(Actually, I think there should have been questions about neoliberalism and support for wars. Those other issues, not so much).
Having a “debate” with ten people was absurd. I did get some impressions, however, e.g., Beto came across as the lightweight I had perceived him to be previously; Warren is as sharp as ever and was perhaps the best put-together; Castro made himself look good; Klobuchar came across as smug; Tulsi Gabbard came across as poorly rehearsed but with some interesting ideas; Ryan came from Ohio and managed to insult the Democratic Party while proposing himself as its leader.
I like the way Trump was a very minor issue. The candidates did a great job of telling people why they were the best, not why the other 9 people were worse. And, no one dedicated much effort into denigrating Trump, which would be like trying to explain why you need to flush a toilet.
(Referring to my remark about reading MAD in the sixties. Copied and pasted because he deleted the last comment I replied to, and such razor wit should not be hidden from an admiring world. Luckily, my response works equally well with what’s left, due to the amount of substance in his rejoinders.)
I’m guessing either Morin wrote this comic before the debate or it was just over his head. Every single thing said had more substance than anything ever out of the POTUS.
Perhaps, Mr., Morin, but not a cuss word, not a belittling name, nor garbled word, phrase or sentence, no blatant lie among them; unlike the ‘jolly, small-hands fellow’ they seek to replace.
So far, my impression is that we have a stable of intelligent informed people ready to step into various positions in the executive branch. My thought is that the choice for presidential candidate has to be someone with expert managerial talent who can pull all this talent together to make an administration that can begin to heal the nation. At this point, I’m not sure which one that person is, but I will be watching.
Blah, blah, blah is better than the 2015 GOP primaries that was nothing but name calling, insults, and small hands jokes. Discussing real issues seriously tend to be boring politics.
With ten people on stage, this is closer to being a quiz show than a debate, it’s a contest to be the first one to manage to get heard with a good answer. Closer to “Jeopardy” than an actual debate.
Geez it is not even 2020 and we have to put up with all this male bovine excrement already. I guess there is lotsa money to be made by the media and the candidates.

More a format problem than because of the candidates.

They all did fine; hopefully not just saying what they think we want to hear.
Well, all except for Tim Conway on the right, who couldn’t get a word in edgewise about compromising with the Right to get things done.

Kinda like the Republican debates in 2016, except THEN it was “Lie…Lie…Lie…Lie…Lie…Lie…Lie…Lie…”

That de Blasio guy sounded pretty good. But so does anyone compared to Captain Bone Spurs.

The “debate” was exceedingly civil – and therefore will be judged an utter failure by the media, who was hoping for something more bloody.

Obviously, Morin didn’t watch.

Yes, folks. This is what passes for intellectualism in conservative editorial cartoons.

He’s only got nine candidates. Who’s missing? Cory? Beto?

Did we expect anything less? Too bad the moderators did not have the ability to cut the mike the instant the “question” was not being addressed.

I liked the way they all attacked nasty Trump, it gives me a little hope.

All election debates are like that. All campaign speeches are like that. Most human expression is like that.

Why do their podiums have Chuck Todd’s dialog on them?

The whole structure of the “debate” is doomed. Too many participants are not even qualified to be there.

At a Trump rally the text would be: “Me,” “Me,” “Me,” etc.
