Fan theory: Baba Mouse keeps newspaper comics going back years. That’s the best part of the paper anyway!

I don’t know how many of y’all ever watched a cartoon called Animaniacs, but Baba Mouse’s mannerisms really reminds me of Slappy Squirrel. :D In a few mins when I get to work, I’ll post a link. ;-) She’s got the sassy, don’t-mess-with-me-I’m-old kind of attitude. I love it!

Nushi continues to walk better, though she does best early in the day. She is hard to keep in one place so I can keep an eye on her, and that’s ok with me! She’s like anyone who feels better after an injury or illneness. You wanna go! She still falls when she pushes herself to hard, but she can turn around or back up with only a minor wobble. On Saturday that would have caused a tumble 80% of the time! It’s amazing! It’s WONDERFUL!!!

Sunday morning was the moment. I woke up because she was moving about on the bed, and sure enough she needed to pee but I had been too slow. We cleaned up and I set her down on the floor and she just moved across the floor to her bowl! Not the frankensteinish stiff limbed straddle legged totter, but a walk! Still wobbly, still a bit uncoordinated, but a WALK!!! I blinked, made sure I was awake, picked her up and put her down again…it was true! Of course I nearly jumped out of my skin for joy. For obvious reasons, but I have to tell you why it happening that way was so amazing.

You see, on Friday night/Saturday morning I dreamed I had woken up, set Nushi down and she had walked. Not once, but twice in that mind-bending taunt of dreaming, waking up and realizing to your sorrow it was a dream, then waking up and doing it again, only to really wake up and realize THAT was a dream too! I tell you, as soon as I could get someplace the cats couldn’t see me I cried. I was SO angy, sad and scared! How cruel! Then I breathed, and I thought…wait. I KNOW I have a lot of people praying, wishing, wanting Nushi to get better. Maybe this was me seeing what everyone wanted to happen. What was coming! At the very least, this re-framing allowed me to let go of my anger and move on. So then when it happened the next morning…I got chills. And then I laughed so hard both cats looked at me like I was crazy!

Old ladies treasure their trash. Especially if it’s historical.

Something I have noticed after caring for my parents. Emotions run much closer to the surface the older you get. The internal ‘filter’ as it were, does not work as well. In my Dad’s case, he makes pronouncements that 25 years ago he might have kept buried. Old people are also incredibly set in their ways. All of which makes dealing with them similar to waltzing in a mine field. You can do it, but if you step wrong…Boom!

So Baba has a special lair inside the chicken coop, eh? She seems to collect newspapers the way I collect books.

There was an old cat lady who lived in a shack behind my grandmother’s house when I was little. I was a free range kid and spent most of my time at her place. She, too, had stacks of newspapers and magazines all neatly arranged in what was clearly some sort of order. She was a lot like Baba – came from Hungary as a teen in 1900, was a widow by the 1950s. She wore men’s old shoes with the toes cut out and housedresses and bib aprons so faded you had to look hard to see there had once been a pattern. And cats everywhere. It was heaven. She was a major dispenser of wisdom, too, like Baba. I wonder if Georgia knew someone like this.

I don’t mean to fluff-shame him … but if I hadn’t seen the last panel, I would have doubted that Tommy could get through that trap door.

One of my grandmas had piles and piles of newspapers. I don’t know if she considered any of them her “best” pile, but they certainly made a maze of her small house!
