Every so often a musical force of influence comes along and changes everything. Their music and innovations are used and adopted so much that the original music loses it’s impact to those who do not know where it came from.

I mean, who doesn’t need cheese?

Growing up in the 60s, it was amazing to see how the Beatles revolutionized rock and pop music. It seemed that they would be the biggest thing FOREVER. Fast forward to late 70s…I was doing my student teaching and used the song Eleanor Rigby as a poem for my class to decipher. A couple of students (middle schoolers) had not known who the Beatles were. One asked me if Paul McCartney was the same Paul McCartney of Wings! It really showed me how quickly a generation can turn. That was 40 years ago and it still amazes me. Wow.

It amazes me how little musical talent so many “star” musicians have. The Beatles (and later Wings), Pink Floyd, and a few others at least wove a fascinating tale while having some hilarious acid trips along the way.

Years ago was chatting with a lad and Paul McCartney’s name came up. He says “Ooh, I know that name! He’s with that REAL old band… Uh, Wings, I think it was!”

Never felt so old in my life.

Little known bit of trivia that I just made up. “Cheese” is in fact the original lyrics written in the early draft of the song by John Lennon. It was Paul McCartney who would subsequently edit it to the now iconic “Love”.

So many (maybe the majority?) young people hate or dislike the Beatles simply because they are “old” and not the current trending stars. Generational bias, ageism, blind prejudice. All generations of young people hate the music their parents and grandparents loved. But it is the few exceptionally open minded, curious young people with the innate ability for critical thinking and unbiased acceptance of different styles of music that are open to discovering and appreciating and liking music that may be from the past and give it a fair listen without blindly and mindlessly rejecting it simply because it’s “old”. In other words they are young people who don’t follow the herd and know how to think for themselves, thereby enriching their own lives. I have met a few young people who love the Beatles and think they’re great, even though the Beatles broke up 40 years before they were born!

Fun Fact: of you play "All you need is love " backwards you get Paul’s mom’s recipe for chili cheese dip. I read it on the internet so it must be true.
