The vast majority of them would have preferred to make war no more, but they weren’t the ones who got to choose.

Losing without raising a defense is always an option.

But that leaves the world to the people who would destroy the defenseless.

And eventually, there are those who will not stand for them any longer, so on it goes.

The war against war goes on and on.

The option to be a pacifist only exists for those strong enough to make other respect that wish. Many of our wars had to be fought. Those who sign up to defend us give up their right to decide whether a particular war is justified, and so we must protect them from glory hungry politicians.

When perfect personal force shields are invented it might work. Till then, someone is always going to try and be the boss by force.

I think the fondest wish for most soldiers (there are other military) is “no more war.”

Each person has a right to choose because of those that chose to serve; the same is true of the right to question the choices of others. I served yet I do not feel the right to speak for other, especially those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. I do feel the RESPONSIBILITY to remember and honor those individuals and allow their sacrifice to speak for them alone.

It’s not the soldiers, son. It’s the governments.

Or, to be more precise, its the corrupt and extreamist leadership of some governments.

Reminds me of an old Calvin and Hobbes strip where Calvin asks his father “How do soldiers killing each other solve the world’s problems?” Not getting an answer, he walks away saying “Sometimes I think grown-ups just ACT like they know what they’re doing!”

Patton would not have been happy with “No more war.”

Actually, I think General Patton would have been satisfied with an end to all wars. He was also realist enough to know that time hadn’t yet arrived.

For all his success as a general, Eisenhower longed for an end to war. But he knew he must remain prepared. The National Highway system started in the 50s had more possible applications in mind than carrying cars and trucks.

No one with a functioning brain wants to fight or die… but many believe that, in the long run, the alternatives may be less pleasant. Many that go into service to their country will either die in that service or return maimed by that service, but even more will complete their service without suffering significant damage. Serving your country is a risk, but many take that risk for many different reasons and not all of those reasons may make sense to everyone.

And, of course, the folks making the decisions are rarely the same folks taking the risks. If the folks taking the risks got to make the decision whether to fight or not, we might not have quite so much fighting…

No more war would be wonderful but there are still a lot of people who want to take over countries and people and they have to be stopped. Otherwise you’ll wake up in a country that is no longer yours. It’s sad it must come to war but we must defend what is ours from those who want to take it from us.

It doesn’t matter what the soldiers want. They don’t make the decisions. The rich politicians and the even more rich military contractors make the decisions. None of their kids ever go to war, so they don’t care.

If enough soldiers revolted when they see their govt is lying to them about the next war something may happen. Better to just say no. By 2030 they expect to have 60% robots armed and ready for battle on land, sea, air and space. Career robots lead by humans to fight the politicians’ wars.
