Okay, my opinion (because Team Evans’ certainly could go a totally different direction than what seems the obvious), but I believe today’s strip plainly states that there isn’t going to be a make-up with Quill. The look on Luann expression in Panel 2: it says “And it was the wise choice”. So unless TE plans on Quill crawling back, asking for another chance – Quill is going to fade away like Aaron Hill.

    -

My only fear is a repenting Quill return is exactly what Luann THINKS will happen. Oh, poor Luann: that’s a lose-lose proposition: (1) if it DOESN’T happen, how will she handle it? or (2) if it DOES, how soon before Quill decides that his career is being held back. A risky move for Luann for the “prize” of a week in New York …

I did just notice that upon a re-read: Pru is placing herself between Bern and Luann … as Bernice is Luann’s best friend, the natural position would be on Luann’s right.

    -

The only logically explanation is it allows Luann to turn to the left and face both Pru and Bern at the same time as Luann “provides the juicy details”

I am such a defender of Luann and Bernice, and we figured out the real story behind Quill, but I hope that Bernice sees Pru as a bridge in communication, and not a competitor in her friendship. She can be a friend to both of them one hopes, and helps them move on to the next step to maturity. Remember I am a hopeless optimist.

It occurs to me that Stealers Wheel’s follow-up single “Star” also has lyrics that perhaps apply to Quill under the circumstances:

So they made you a star, now your head’s in a cloud,Now you’re walking down the street with your feet off the ground…They read in the press all about your success,They believe every word they’ve been told. After all you’ve been through, tell me what will you do,When you find yourself out in the cold?Ah, tell me.

6I am reposting my comment back to CR7hater… after I correct some typos in my original post:CR7hater…. you state….. " but I believe today’s strip plainly states that there isn’t going to be a make-up with Quill."I can understand the thought behind your sentiment. However, I am still thinking that there are many LIKELY ways Greg could (and IMO, will) have Luann and Quill patch things up.I am seeing today as the start of a big “girl talk” session between Luann, Bernie, and Pru… where Luann works through all her thoughts and actions during the times of all the arguments and the “breakup”. During that discussion, I would not be surprised if:1) Bernie & Pru will be able to help Luann see that MANY of Luann’s actions did nothing to help the Quill/Luann relationship, and in fact, MANY of her actions ended up being divisive, even though that was not her intent. 2) I think Luann’s initial jealousy of Pru is once instance of a mistake Luann had. 3) Luann’s limited understanding (and seemingly limited interest in understanding) of the time, effort, and focus Quill needs for any remote chance to succeed in theater is another example. and 4) Luann’s decision to mostly let her feelings fester and grow… leading to them being expressed angrily instead of in a real, helpful form of communication…. that too was a problem that she caused.Quill was, of course, not perfect in his interactions. But, I suspect that if Luann really talks about her feelings and what transpired in the relationship…. with Bernie and Pru… the end result will be that she will see she, herself, had a very big contribution to what was the problem in their relationship. In the above fashion, this is how I see Luann and Quill making up… Luann will become willing to really, and honestly communicate… and probably Quill will too… then they will be a model couple again.NOW, please note that is what I am feeling will happen. In my own preferred scenario I would much rather Quill and Luann remain apart. I personally think it would be very nice to see Luann date other people. But, I still do not think that will happen.

Why do so many people seem determined to blame Lu for everything? Like Q-ball was Mr. Perfect, always willing to make time for Luann, always ready to talk to / listen to her?-Why should Lu be expected to make all the concessions, always be the one to give in, to put Quill’s wants and needs above her own?

He never did that for her. Lu was the giver Quill was the taker.

I am not charmed by those who see Pru’s sitting invitation as some kind of gay predatory move. That seems childish or homophobic. I am disappointed in some of the readers.

I saw Pru as being welcoming and into girl bonding. I also seem to remember that she grew up in an orphanage, which would make her want to be surrounded by friends, I would think. This remains a good plot choice, and I have been looking forward to the strip more than usual.

I wonder how smug Luann will be when Quill started dating a fellow theatre major who is fine. That Luann and Quill grew apart does not make him a jerk. They really don’t have much in common. You don’t have to compromise much in the best relationships if you are a fit.

Some posters seem to be confused as to why a person (Luann here) could be sad about taking the active role in ending a relationship then, in a few moments, be happy/proud that she ended it. First, the end of any relationship will usually instigate a grieving process for that relationship. Further, given how much the character had invested of her own identity in the relationship, just the loss of that is sufficient to produce a sense of sorrow that is not dependent on who took action in terminating the relationship. Thus, it should not be surprising that she was sad over the end of the relationship even though she was the active party in ending it. Second, most humans do not experience emotions singularly. At any given time, we are experiencing a range of emotional states. One may be primary at a particular moment in time, but that does not mean other emotions are not being felt/processed. In today’s strip, the pride/confidence that Luann feels from taking an active, not passive, role, combined with feeling a bit of superiority (not quite right, but I am not sure how to better characterize it) over Bernice for being able to do something Bernice did not even consider her capable of doing, along with the surprise felt from Pru’s revelation, overcomes her earlier sorrow/grief. Finally, readers should likely not infer that Luann is ‘over’ any grief/sorrow she may feel simply because it is not currently her primary emotional state. Most people continue to grieve the loss of a relationship for some period of time, even if it is not a primary emotional state. Going forward, likely at unexpected times, Luann will feel sadness and loss over Quill not being in her life any more, but in this moment, it is not her primary or even secondary emotion.

I suspect that Greg and Karen did a sly job of making baboons out of all of us. Enter Pru, Luann gets jealous and has fight with Quill, Bernice runs to her defense, everyone comments on Pru’s sexuality pro and con, and then the three girls just sit down as normal as can be, no big thing, still a family friendly comic strip. We stirred up fires of judgement and speculation that, so far, were not necessary.

Red, believe me. There is life after editting. Heck, i can verify from from pieces i wrote in the past for publication that there is even life after severe editting. Harder than that, there is life after sitting down w coworkers to rip apart hypotheses and studies to make them stronger. Now, THAT is brutal.

I have read in the past that the most common cause of tears in men is anger, while in women frustration is the most common cause. Not knowing how the work was done, though, i do not know how to weigh it. Writing sometjing that does not work can be frustrating, though, so I will accept your “womanish tears” line.

I’m with Argythree. I didn’t take this strip this way at all. LuAnn has always been boy crazy with a side of unrequited love. It’s just that Quill’s priority is theatre, and she is right – he hasn’t been spending any time with her. For the first time ever, she is saying that ‘unrequited’ doesn’t work for her anymore and is making a grown-up decision to move on. So, I didn’t take her facial expression as a smirk, more as a ’Who’d believe it? I just grew up’ look between friends.

P.S. Quill – kinda arrogant move saying, “You’ll be back”. Yeah.

P.S.S. Maybe Pru is just happy to have friends.

Pru is now part of the ‘girl gang’. I’m guessing she will be the facilitator of communication. Bernice once said (correctly) to Luann ( a while back) that the biggest problem in relationships is that people don’t communicate. So the communication starts and Quill will be marginalized (like in the Xmas card drawing on Dec 25). Now, If Pru should meet Dez, I believe those two will get along. they are both more worldly that the Pitt crowd and who knows what else.

Hey, Red: might you have been inspired by the National Lampoon magazine sports columnist Red Ruffansore?

I concur! And Gerry Rafferty has “deeper cuts” (i.e., more great songs that aren’t “Baker Street” or “Right Down The Line”. In fact, I like “Night Owl”, “Already Gone”, and “Keep It To Yourself”*, from his early days with the Humblebums…. – ( * Click on link, or go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0KHVaBqcsk )

Human beings are basically “sexual”, meaning that apart from the conception process, we’ll go with anyone unless we have a preference.

Just send it back, and I’ll tend to the postage… Just let me go get my 1 cent “Knight Rider” stamps… I think they’re good in England, so…I’m sure the Postal Service would like ’em, too… what do I need- about 15 of ’em, you think?

Also, let it be noted that that luann has been shown as having applied herself to more than one academic art class—more than any other character has been seen in.

This should be good! We get to hear it all from Luann’s perspective, with salty commentary by Bernice and soothing comments from Pru….

If Puzzlewhiz or Jay didn’t mention it, I would sum it up with Mr. Shakespeare’s opinion..“Much Ado about Nothing.”

“But my version is in reference to Bernice’s comment in panel 3, where she’s urging Luann to “Tell more, Girl!”.^Yes, I am aware. I was also saying that “Guilt-more Girls” was another one, due to the fact that they possibly could “pile up” all the dirt on Quill…not that they would do this very thing, but it’s just part of the general reference of what some would perceive happens in “girl talk sessions” like this…

Hour glass shaped outhouses (or backhouses as Dad used to say) would sure have made one of his teen pranks easier. They used to move the structure back juuuuuust enough to uncover the hole. Well, you get the idea.

Built like a brick s___(whatever) house pretty much meant built unusually well.

I am personally not a big one for religion, and yet my favorite poem is Hopkin’s “Carrion Comfort”, especially for the earlier statements of survival in it. Go figure…

Given the ages of many of the readers here National Lampoon was part of our lives at some point.

I have a rather fanciful question (and I hope that will prevent the anti-gay haters from tearing me apart for even proposing such a thing) …

If Prudence strikes a responsive chord in Bernice and Tiffany really is interested enough in Gunther to be a bit more forward in her advances …

    Where does that leave Piro?

Apology accepted, thank you. Just a suggestion to not jump all over a person (which is how it felt to me) when you disagree… especially when there has been a track record of carefully thought out comments of a variety of perspectives.

“I read an article on the Internet today where the Westboro Baptist Church plans to picket Blake Shelton’s concerts,”.Just for that, I shall stop attending.Oh, wait. I never attended Westboro.Grace Baptist, McDavid, Florida. Our preacher’s crazy too, but mostly on other subjects. He’s always preaching out of the Book of Hezekiah (a nonexistent text for you who didn’t know).

" he said, along with banning ALL Muslims from this country if he’s (God forbid) elected.".I don’t favor Donald Trump, but wasn’t he talking banning their admission from outside? Not talking about ejecting Muslim citizens?.Poor old JEB! got in trouble for saying we should give preference to Christian refugees because some Muslims on many sides have been enjoying beheading them.
