The more things change the more they stay the same. Unfortunately, I find little humor in this one, in light of the atrocities committed in the name of religion,

Saint Nicholas Saves Three Innocents from Death..I happened to see this very painting just yesterday, while reading about St. Nicholas of Myra!.Of course, I haven’t done anywhere near as thorough a job as Mabrndt does, but I thought I could enlighten the early readers until M. has a post up. (And thanks to you for diligently educating us all, Mabrndt! I am thankful for your efforts on this day of giving thanks.)

A click-to-enlarge image can be found at Mr. Melcher’s blog entry (yesterday).Nicholas of Myra Saves from Death Three Innocent Prisoners (link shows his Wikipedia page) is shown, with a different coloration image, by the artist’s current-location page (Google translated). If you mouse over the thumbnail image there, a description will appear; but, it currently has HTML formatting errors, making it even more difficult to read than usual translations. This is the correctly formatted, still choppy, Google translated description:

Nicholas of Myra saves from death three innocent prisoners.By Repin period of creative research establishment «Zaporozhets» the painting was released «Nicholas of Myra saves from death three innocent prisoners» (1890), which was Viko¬nano commissioned Verhnoharkivskoho Nicholas convent. This topic Repin developed in three variants (the first, in 1888 the establishment, located in the Russian Museum of St. Petersburg, the second, dated 1890 year – in the Kyiv Museum of Russian Art).As it says, 3 variants exist (the first of which was seen in an earlier strip). The motivation for the painting (Bing translated) is discussed on page 66 of an online book preview. This recounts a version of the event, depicted in the painting, which was later part of a Saint Nicholas miracle. The artist’s Wikipedia page (Google translated Russian Wikipedia page has more) and collection (more under Subcategories at each level).Ninth, of the 10 works, by this artist, that have, so far, appeared in Mr. Melcher’s blog, to also appear here (10 total).
