Is someone in the R.A. program playing a prank on Bernice by telling her she has to enforce a “no guests after 10 PM” rule? It’s my understanding that few colleges have such rules for their dorms in 2015 — except for strict religious colleges, which Moony U. definitely doesn’t appear to be.

Is this a real rule at colleges nowadays? So many of the rules in that huge book that Bernice lugs around seem unrealistic.

Lots of events behind closed doors in the last few days. We leave the Luann mets Pru arc with Pru saying something apparently to or about Quill behind a closed door, and now Bernice, in her role as a DA, hears a laugh behind a closed door, Tiffany’s laugh. Of course, as has been already been pointed out, Bernice had her own violation of the after 10 pm rule, letting Piro sleep on her couch. So….what does it all mean?

In fairness, the party and the ferret episodes happened before Bern was an RA. Only Piro’s most recent overnight stay happened after she had an official title.

I agree that she’s being hypocritical, but Bern does have more than a bit of myopia when it comes to looking in the mirror.

She’s trying to grow up, which means, on the one hand, discharging the responsibilities of her position as RA, while simultaneously making “adult” decisions about her own nocturnal company. You and I might think she let herself get manipulated by Piro, but she wouldn’t rationalize it that way.

I also think that rule is idiotic and unenforceable. It wouldn’t have flown at Berkeley forty years ago!

Finally, I wonder if Gunther is maybe protesting just a bit too much. I think there really wasn’t any “doing” going on in there (with the lights out?) but he secretly wishes there were, whether he’ll admit it or not. He did have a crush on Tiffany at one time, no?

According to Wikipedia, Evans was born in 1947, so his ideas about campus life, with curfews and other such rules may be stuck back in the early to mid sixties. As others have pointed out, few colleges (other than religious colleges) have such rules anymore.

8Implausible….. I agree with you completely that Bernice is hypocritical. But, in some ways, I think that is a rather important and realistic point that is (purposefully or inadvertently) being made by Greg….. namely that many (in reality most) of us have some set of ideal goals, standards, expectations….. but that many (again, in reality most) of us fail to meet these ideal goals, standards, expectations. And, sometimes we fail to meet them because we CANNOT do so, but truth be told… in many circumstances we fail to meet them because we CHOOSE to not do so. It is the frailty of the human spirit, I think.

I truly wonder whether Greg and Karen think these rules are realistic or whether they merely figure that their readership (i.e., old people) expect that colleges have rules like this. Obviously, they didn’t actually ask some modern-day college students what the rules really are, so probably they don’t care.

Hypocrisy aside, I’d have to say her snarky comment to Tiffany was uncalled for. I got the impression that she didn’t believe that Tiffany was studying, and was letting the animosity from High School get the better of her.

I wonder if Bernice will “snitch” to Luann about Gunther being in Tiffany’s dorm room… after 10:00 pm no less.

Also- Am I the only one that feels that the supporting cast is developing more depth than the main characater? I know I find the arcs with Tiffany/Gunter (short as those arcs are) more interesting than the ones with Luann as the focal point.

When I think of Bernice “Good Samaritan” just doesn’t pop to mind as a character trait. When have we seen her act that way, other than that time with Piro? I therefore suspect she had other motives, even if she is reluctant to admit them to herself.

Good points. Bernice seems to have taken the RA job on without giving any thought to what was in it for her or what negatives could result from her becoming an authority figure.

And if Moody U. really has rules that this 10:00 curfew thing, no wonder they have to give out scholarships (Bernice) or get well-heeled parents to pay (Tiffany). In fact, I wonder how Hair and Viper got in … or why they’d want to be at a school with those kinds of restrictive rules.

I think Team Evans may well have gone off and created a version of campus life which is completely removed from the real world. (Not that I think they’ll make any changes just because we point these things out to them.)
