We’ll be having an exciting Tuesday later on..we’re heading for our state’s “State Fair.” I especially like the crafts exhibits. There is even going to be a glass-maker (I’ve always been fascinated with glass-blowing). And, of course, the requisite animals, both big and small. I even like some of the “fair food”…even if the cholesterol is off the charts! Gotta love the ‘net…downloaded the tickets to get in and also a map of the fair-grounds, and a MapQuest, too! Anyway, ’nite all! ;)-——————————————————————————-“The posteriors of this day; which the rude multitude call the afternoon.” (_Love’s Labour’s Lost_ by Wm. Shakespeare, 1564-1616)

So, a huge misstep here. For whatever reason, Evans wanted his readers to buy into the “Gunther is a nice boy and deserves a hot girlfriend because he’s nice and boring like an old man in a wimpy teen’s body did I mention he’s nice?” thing—and now, he forces the pair into a plot that makes NO SENSE. Ha ha, let’s have TJ on trial, instead!

I’m actually from Lima, Peru. If it took so little time to get from that hotel, supposedly the Marriot (by the way, it has an incredible ocean view), to the clinic, it will surely be a good clinic. “Clinicas” are usually privately owned, whereas hospitals are usually state hospitals, and not always that good. Lima is quite a big city, 10 million people, and you will find first-class accommodations, as well as very poor areas (the latter usually in the outskirts of the city). Having been once the capital of the viceroyalty of Peru, which in the 16th to 17th century was a great part of South America, Lima has a lot of history. Not far from here, about 160 miles north, is Caral, the oldest city in all of the Americas (roughly 2600 b.C. and 2000 b.C.). Lima has a lot of tradition and a very rich history, and great contrasts between very wealthy neighborhoods and much poverty.

So let me see if I understand this correctly, Rosa, who was apparently smart enough to be accepted to Yale did not bother doing any research when it came to Peru and the clinic? Not only that but Gunther who apparently is equally smart decided to follow without much though? Bottom line is they both gave up their education on a whim for something that is failing across the board. There’s not much either of them can do in a clinic like that short of bed pans and paperwork. Then again with Evans at the helm when has reality mattered.

Easy does it folks. There may still be hope.

Do we know that the driver took them to the correct clinic? Do we know if this clinic has “satellites/outreach stations” in places more aligned with Rosa’s mindset? There are a number of plausible possibilities.

Still, I fear like most here, that Rosa may have not done her proper homework, and will have second thoughts about staying here in Peru. Which also brings to mind, a more “Machiavellian” possibility. Are Rosa’s parents actually in on the whole thing, and colluded with the Uncle to mis-direct them to the wrong clinic, so that she would be disappointed and want to come back home and go to Yale???? Hmmmmm……. :-PPP

Ugh. I am of the “camp” that thinks that Rosa had no real clue or insight into what or where she would be working. I think she thought “impoverished location, helping the poor” and she now finds out it is “urban chic folks”. I am finding Rosa more and more frustrating. Hopefully Gunther will get a clue and move on with his life.

It was only years later I learned more about the political complexities of the era. Have you been back since?

As for the strip, I hope that one or both of them thrives in this new situation, rather than just going back home. My guess is Gunther will find his niche in the clinic, at least for awhile.

Definition of the term “moron” by the Free Dictionary online:1. A stupid person, a dolt.2. Pschology: A peson of mild mental retardation having a mental age of from 7 to 12 years and generally having communication and social skills enabling some degree of academic or vocational eduacation. The term belongs to a classification system no longer in use and now considered offensive.-It appears to me that neither definition applies to Rosa…

Major fork in the road. Did Rosa fail to get all the information from her uncle? Is this hospital just a staging center for a more remote clinic? Has Rosa just derailed two promising college careers? Will Gunther begin to resent Rosa? And, finally, will they move into one room together?

What language did Gunther study in HS ? With any academic major, he had to have one. Universities require such..Given the probable location of Pitts (So. Cal., or Arizona), most kids would study Spanish. Many schools only have that, but some larger ones would have French — a few German. [ Latin is long gone. ].Big city experimental schools could have Russian or Chinese, Pitts seems most unlikely..Even Knute or Ox would know ’estamos aqui ’ if they took only one semester of Spanish..So Gunther is either very stupid, in DEEP panic, or most probably took German.

All this running of the bulls reminds me of a demotivational poster I saw once. It said, “I never ran with the bulls in Spain, but I was outside a Curves once when the fire alarm went off…”

I’ll be honest, I was never big on bull fighting and/or the Pamplona run (I guess I’ll have to turn in my “Ernest Hemingway” card…) ;-). But did you ever go to the “Tomatina?” That seems interesting. Once a year, people gather in this particular town in Spain (I forget the name), where, at the appointed hour, and precisely for one hour only, people get to throw rotten tomatoes at each other. They have to be “rotten” tomatoes because actual “fresh” tomatoes are hard enough to hurt someone if thrown at them. After one hour, precisely, it stops, and people clean up and the town goes back to normal. To quote Mr. Spock, “Fascinating…” In fact, sort of like the “Landru” episode with the “festival.”

“Are you of the body?” :-)
