Calvin’s in first grade, ma’am. Do you think he had learned how to tell temperature by looking at the thing you’re mentioning? (Welcome to Twenty Twenty, C&H readers.)
Really, if it’s snowing that hard as to make a one foot (estimate) snow drift in the front door for the brief time Calvin had the door opened, Mom, who certainly has looked out the window, could have answered the question "Sure looks like it to me.)
Calvin is preparing for a future career at The Weather Channel. Checking how cold it is at the source today, leads to checking on hurricanes at the source tommorow.
It was my sister’s birthday, late in May, and we were going to have a picnic on the patio. I was downstairs looking out the patio door watching it snow. So I went upstairs where Mom was getting the tray ready to take outside and said, “It’s snowing.”
“No,” Mom replied. “It doesn’t snow in May.” When she had everything ready on the tray, we followed her down the stairs to the patio door where we stopped.
“Well, I’ll be! Tentoes is right. It’s snowing!” So we had our picnic in the playroom.
Calvin has a good technique. Some scientists make a quick observation and then make their conclusions. Calvin knows you must take time to observe and measure before coming to the proper conclusion.
December last year just had little freezing rain and little snow, start of 2020, I had just finished a birthday, today 2020 Happy New Year we are dry in Central KS, NW KS did get snow in December.
Or, had this been the ‘60s: “Let me show you another use for a wooden spoon!” And my father in the background reminding me: “What are you trying to do, warm up the outdoors?”
This reminds me of the Bill Engval weather prediction method – the guys at the TV station will send a smoker outside, and after a few minutes they let him back in and when he can talk and say something like “It’s got to be 20 below out there!”, they run with that.

It’s so cold, I saw a chicken with a capon.
It’s so cold, I saw a dog trying to jump start another (at least that’s what I think they were doing!)

One could argue this one is Mom’s fault. She needs to be more specific with Calvin!
