Tank McNamara (I think that was the name), but yeah – not a lot of sports comics. :)

My favorite anonymous company survey was back in the early 2000’s. HR was placing the surveys on everyone’s desk. One of our IT people walked by and asked for a copy so he could fill it out. The HR person said something like “hold on – let me get your survey” and consulted the sheet correlating survey numbers to employees. That told us all we needed to know about providing any real feedback on that survey.

I remember thinking this for a long time, but personally – I’d almost rather have just the comics pages and none of the rest. :) Growing up, I remember one paper actually did have 2 pages for comic strips and the political comics were in the op-ed or politics section. Admittedly, there were still many strips I just passed over, but they were available and mostly enjoyable.

I didn’t realize that this was a big owner cutting down comics. I kind of see it from the “big owner” point, but … I miss the days when the local papers would run stuff their local readers wanted to see. Local readers stopped liking Heathcliff? It goes in favor of something else. They want to see (comic xyz)? It gets put in somewhere. I remember way, way back when I was younger the local paper ran some polls of its readers asking for votes about which comics to keep as they were considering rearranging things. That just makes sense because you can only afford to pay so many creators and have space for just so many comics.

I get most of my comics more directly so the newspaper thing doesn’t affect me as much in a direct sense and I wouldn’t have even realized that was happening without the callout.

OK – had no idea this was one owner affecting all newspapers. I haven’t picked up a newspaper in months or years – and then pretty much only for the local or entertainment sections (including comics). I get all of my comics direct from the author, through here, or sometimes arcamax (when they work). I still think that there’s a business decision being made more than anything else and that is going to affect everyone, but I don’t know how you’d get away with it not affecting everyone. Maybe if there were a site that aggregated all sorts of comic strips or something …

Didn’t FBOFW reboot along the way? I might be thinking of a different comic, but I think I stopped reading about that time. Maybe it was Sally Forth?

As for the comics dropping – is it due to lack of readership or demand for the comics? That would seem more reasonable. If the readers aren’t following or don’t really enjoy particular strips, there’s not a good reason for the paper to take up space on the page for it.

I had a teacher like that – he would assign papers but was okay with them all being turned in late. I turned them all in one set of papers. I received credit for one of the assignments because he couldn’t be bothered to read to see if I actually had done more.

Way back when there was a company that inserted a small blurb in their T&C that the first person to send a specific email to a given address would get a small, but not too small, cash prize. They said that it took 3-5 years before someone claimed the prize.

Not seeing items on shelves that take up lots of space. Take away a couple packs of TP and you clear up a lot of space. So the psychology of “scarcity” kicks in, especially if it’s unusual to see. Doesn’t help that there’s a long supply chain involved in products like that so you can’t “just get some more”.On the other hand, I know several people who found ways to make do with the commercial supplies at home – because that’s a completely different process and many businesses were closed so there was an abundance of that sort of TP/PT.

Sadly, I’ve seen too many churches deciding to cancel services when Christmas falls on a Sunday…. “We should let families spend time together.” Which does tend to miss the point of the holiday in the first place. :/
