No one has ever said anything, but Max is on his second pair of glasses since the strip started.

As a child glasses-wearer, I can’t tell you how many I went through. I was always losing them or leaving them places. If Max is only on his second pair, he’s doing pretty well.

As far as I know, I’ve been through three pairs of eye glasses: fifth grade, after high school, and then some few years after that. Reasons: didn’t wear them that much, I think broke, and new prescription.

I have three different pairs with my current prescription, four if you count sunglasses! I just like glasses. And you can get them cheap on the internet these days.

I still have the same prescription I had in 1996. Sometimes they don’t change.

This actually happened a lot to me. Kids with glasses were something of a rarity in the late 50s. Everybody who knew me wanted to try them on. The bullies wanted to knock them off, but that didn’t always end well. Later my youngest sisters kept putting them on if I left them in reach.

    Ha ha…NO.

I had Lasik and while the results are quite pleasing, the procedure and recovery were a freaking nightmare I would not wish upon anyone but my worst enemies. (Ha ha! That was over a decade ago, and my heart’s pounding just thinking about it!)

I also have 3 different pairs with versions of my current prescription, but one of them is for distance (driving), one is for reading, and one is for working on the computer. I keep reusing my favorite frames (I bought several really cool ones long ago during a trip to Germany) and simply have new lenses put in when I need a new prescription.

And sometimes I find a pair with an older prescription that works really well so I swap them out (my current distance glasses). Oddly enough, I don’t really need glasses for mid-range stuff, so most of the time, I carry them perched on my head.

This sometimes leads to the classic joke situation because I might be searching for my reading glasses and the person I’m talking to will point to the top of my head…

Gee, I just pictured you looking like Velma Dinkely from Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?
