Awww. Poor Marcie. Poor Peppermint Patty.
Makes one wonder what happened to Mrs. Reichardt.
I’m too young to understand what painting her tongue black would mean. Can anyone explain?
Of course Peppermint Patty would expect Marcie to know something she has never been told. I met a girl like that when I started at a new school. I asked her one day what her father did, and she replied, “He just lies around in the graveyard all day.” Hey, you could have said “My father died years ago” but it wouldn’t have embarassed the hell out of the newbie.
Well Marcie, at least Peppermint Patty did not get upset with you for asking the question.
I’m going to assume Patty’s mother is deceased or just walked out on them.
What does it mean to paint your tounge black?
Poor Marcie…that feeling you have when you feel that you went one question too far…
I never knew that Peppermint Party had no mother
Well, that was dark.
It was always said so casually. And never explained.
Don’t blame yourself, sweetie. You didn’t know… until now.
This one today has left me so sad.
Marcie should go home and give her mother a big hug and kiss. Never knew after all these years that Peppermint Patty didn’t have a mother….
As the orchestra strikes up “Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child”…
Actually a very far sighted strip. My stint as a single father began in the early 90s. Being a single parent is difficult no matter what sex you are but being male presented special problems. Schools always asked to speak to their mother. My bosses did not understand when I needed off for the kids. Other parents did not let their kids come over to spend the night because you must be a pervert. Remember once trying to buy a white tee shirt for my daughter and the sales person saying I better ask her mother because white was hard to keep clean. The Attorney General refused to persue child support. No publicity in dead beat moms. And the list went on and on. My kids were clean, fed and well dressed. My daughter had French braids when she wanted. Both my son and daughter are well adjusted and did well in school. For me women were potholes in the road of life. Thank you. (putting soap box away)
I never knew that…..
I don’t understand why so many of you are calling Patty hurtful or hateful or whatever. She only make a simple statement answering Marcie’s question. What’s so hateful about that?
She had a mother otherwise she wouldn’t be here.
Peanuts da 2 best
How about giving your mother a hug instead, Marcie?

Don’t feel bad, Marcie — you obviously didn’t know.
In several strips we learned that Peppermint Patty’s dad calls her “a rare gem” (apparently Schulz called his daughter that). Always thought that was sweet.
Poor Marcie has always been pretty clueless. Her strength is that she is (at least very often) the kindest and least selfish character. Her gaffe here will be remembered for a long time.
Poor Peppermint Patty! It’s bad to live it, but when forced to say it to your friends, it must be galling. :(
