Actually, the reason behind “niner” is to avoid confusion with “five”. Radio transmission at the time the NATO Phonetic Alphabet was developed was nowhere near the great sound quality we have today. Of course I had to learn the NATO alphabet while I was in Basic Training and I am very glad I did. I still use it today, some forty-odd years later.
French is fairly common only in certain areas of the world. I know that drives some French folks crazy, but that’s the way it is. :D
