When I point out Wiley’s consistent prejudice against businessmen I get told “It’s just a cartoon”.

The company I used to work for had annual ethics training. As we were walking out of a two-hour ethics class, my boss said, " Well, all this talk about ethics is good, but just remember, if I tell you to lie to the customer and you don’t do it, I’ll fire your ass."

Ethics? What is this ethics you speak of? Only if you lie, cheat and steal can you get lots of money. Money is considered success.

It seems to me that every CEO was a rat, at least until he could get others to rat for him, without ratting on him.

If the CEO gets a $1,000,000 raise, it’s a strong economy. If a worker gets a $1 raise it’s socialism.

The advice I received when writing the client’s report for a job that may have strayed outside the contract specs: “Don’t give them ropes to beat us with.”

It was Adam Smith more than 200 years ago who pointed out the goal of the businessman is to make money for himself – not provide goods or services to the public. Goods/Services are only the means to the end – $. (But in the era proto-Industrialization Smith saw it as a good thing. Cue Industrial Revolution.) And the era of the robber barons showed that, unchecked, businesses will do anything to keep the dollars flowing into the boss. Ethics just got in the way.

At my former job, the university (which at the time was in financial & moral distress) established a “council of ethics.” A tenured prof i knew there told me, “Whenever an institution starts talking about ‘ethics’, run for your life!”

To have ethics, you must stand your ground despite the rotten tomatoes of others. To maintain ethics, you must not throw the tomatoes back.

What a waste of tomatoes. Office drones know they have no power to make an ethical stand. At best, they can leave without being blacklisted.

Tomatoes (and all produce) are too expensive to waste like that. Throw something else at them.
